Be warned: this article reveals major spoilers from the finale of Daredevil: Born Again, specifically the episode “The Southern Cross.” A surprising development for Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be reversed by a powerful and threatening character.
Charlie Cox, the star of Daredevil: Born Again, recently told The Wrap he’s eager to work with David Tennant. Tennant famously played the villain Kilgrave in Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and Cox admires that performance. Cox found it particularly interesting how Kilgrave’s children in the comics caused everyone to forget Daredevil’s secret identity, calling the storyline “fun, cool, and interesting.”
David Tennant’s portrayal of Kilgrave was so good that Vincent D’Onofrio hopes the character might reappear, though he acknowledges Tennant is likely very busy. Despite this, D’Onofrio expressed interest in seeing crossovers between his character and others within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Charlie Cox, who has played the Marvel character since 2015, mentioned he’d love to see some exciting crossovers happen. He specifically hopes for team-ups involving all the Avengers, and for his Daredevil character to interact with Spider-Man – but as Daredevil, not as his alter ego, Matt Murdock. Cox first appeared in a Marvel Studios film in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he played Peter Parker’s lawyer.
He expressed a desire to work with Tatiana Maslany again, specifically on a She-Hulk project, after guest-starring in her Disney+ series. He finished by saying he thoroughly enjoyed working with Maslany, praising her as one of the most talented actors of his generation and highlighting the impressive way she handled the challenging tone of the She-Hulk series.
Even though Cox is eager to collaborate with Tennant again, it’s important to remember that Kilgrave died in the first season of Jessica Jones when Jessica Jones killed him. Still, the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again could potentially introduce his children, who might still be living somewhere in the main MCU universe (Earth-616).
Kilgrave, a Marvel villain, has a disturbing history of using his mind control powers to sexually assault women, resulting in several unwanted pregnancies. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) decides to change the outcome of the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, introducing Kilgrave’s children could be a way to accomplish that.
This approach lets the Disney+ show delve into a more complex side of Tennant’s character without bringing him back to life and undoing a key event from season one of Jessica Jones. While Marvel Studios does use the idea of alternate versions of characters, that storyline can’t go on forever.
The current storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, known as the Multiverse Saga, will end with the movie Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027. This film is expected to gently restart the MCU, leading into Phase 7 and future movies, and the franchise will probably move away from using alternate versions of characters after that.
As a huge Daredevil fan, I’m thrilled to share that seasons 1 and 2 of ‘Born Again’ are now available to stream on Disney+! And the good news doesn’t stop there – we can all look forward to season 3 hitting the platform sometime in 2027. I’ve already started rewatching, and it’s fantastic!
