More Taylor Sheridan is coming to Netflix.
Taylor Sheridan is incredibly productive in television, having created the popular Yellowstone franchise for Paramount. He’s also the creative force behind series like Lioness, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown. While those shows are ongoing, one of his most intense projects, a Western limited to a single season, is about to find a new home on a different streaming service.
The series Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which first aired in 2023, will be available on Netflix starting June 1st, according to What’s on Netflix. You’ll be able to watch it in the U.S., the UK, and most other countries. Though Taylor Sheridan is known for creating many shows, Bass Reeves was created by Chad Feehan, with Sheridan acting as an executive producer.
The eight-episode series Bass Reeves tells the story of Bass Reeves, a legendary lawman and one of the first African American deputy U.S. Marshals to serve west of the Mississippi River. David Oyelowo stars as Reeves, and the show also features performances by Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland, Shea Whigham, Garrett Hedlund, Barry Pepper, and Demi Singleton.
As a big fan of Westerns, I’ve been following the reviews for Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and it’s looking really good! Most critics seem to love it, especially David Oyelowo’s performance – everyone’s saying he’s fantastic. They’re also appreciating how well the show blends a classic procedural format with the historical setting. The numbers back it up too – it’s sitting at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, but audiences really seem to be enjoying it, giving it a 93% score!
Beyond receiving positive reviews, Bass Reeves proved popular with viewers on Paramount+. The first two episodes attracted 7.5 million viewers on both Paramount+ and CBS within their first week, indicating it has the potential to become a big hit on Netflix next month.
Even though Lawmen: Bass Reeves has been popular with audiences, there hasn’t been any official announcement about a second season. However, last year, David Oyelowo told ScreenRant he’d be eager to reprise his role if given the chance.
I think if enough people want more episodes of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, it could happen. I really enjoyed playing that character, and I’d definitely be willing to reprise the role, so we’ll see what the future holds.
Whether we’ll see more of Bass Reeves is still unknown, but Taylor Sheridan is continuing to create a lot of television. He’s an executive producer on Marshals, the new Yellowstone sequel focusing on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), and he also created The Madison. A second season of The Madison and another season of Marshals have already been greenlit.
In addition to his other projects, Taylor Sheridan is an executive producer on Dutton Ranch, a new show continuing the story of characters Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) from Yellowstone. The show reunites Sheridan with creator David Feehan, but recent reports indicate Feehan has left the production before its May 15th release, allegedly due to disagreements with some of the main actors.
While there aren’t currently any confirmed plans for another season of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, its arrival on Netflix will introduce the show to a much wider audience both in the United States and internationally. If many people watch it on Netflix, it could lead to the possibility of more episodes being made.
