A new streaming service in the UK now features a series from Ryan Murphy, starring Darren Criss and Penélope Cruz. The show, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which is part of Murphy’s American Crime Story collection, tells the story of the shocking murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, portrayed by Édgar Ramírez.
The series, inspired by Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors, begins with the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. It then uses flashbacks to show how the two men first met in 1990.
Penélope Cruz plays Donatella, Gianni Versace’s sister and a fashion designer, while Ricky Martin plays Antonio D’Amico, Gianni’s partner and a model. Martin’s performance earned him an Emmy nomination.
Channel 4 in the UK now offers The Assassination of Gianni Versace for streaming. The show, which previously aired on Netflix, is described as a captivating retelling of the tragic events that had a lasting impact on culture.
The series first aired in 2018 on FX in the United States and BBC Two in the United Kingdom. It was developed by Tom Rob Smith and executive produced by Murphy, after the original creators, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, left the project.
Critics generally loved The Assassination of Gianni Versace, giving it an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 97 reviews.
