Indiana authorities have revealed that Nicholas Brendon, known for his role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died in March from accidental drowning.
The Putnam County Coroner’s report, released to The Times on Tuesday, stated that the actor, famous for playing Xander Harris, died of heart disease. Contributing factors included pneumonia and a prior heart attack.
Brendon passed away on March 20th, his family shared on social media. The cause of death was natural, and a coroner’s report confirmed he had a 90% blockage in a major artery. He was 54 years old.
His family shared on Instagram in March that he was a passionate, sensitive person with a relentless drive to create. They explained that his art genuinely showed who he was at his core.

Nicholas Brendon, famous for playing the funny and dependable Xander Harris on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” passed away on Friday. He was 54 years old and had been facing health problems, including a heart condition, for some time.
Before he passed away, Brendon struggled with several health problems. In 2022, he was hospitalized after being diagnosed with a heart defect and experiencing a cardiac event. The actor, known for his role in “Criminal Minds,” also had multiple surgeries on his spine to address cauda equina syndrome, a rare condition affecting nerves in the lower back. This spinal issue stemmed from a fall in 2021 that required immediate surgery to prevent paralysis, according to his manager, Theresa Fortier.
The coroner’s report detailed the circumstances of Brendon’s death. It stated that due to the actor’s worsening health, Fortier had been spending more time with him and was the one who contacted authorities when he passed away. The report confirmed there was no evidence of foul play, and everything in Brendon’s home—which was being renovated—appeared normal. According to the report, Fortier told officials that Brendon, a long-time smoker, had been experiencing a persistent cough and chest pain and had been trying to treat himself with over-the-counter medication before his death. Brendon had also refused further medical care.

Dolly Parton is receiving medical care for health problems that began last autumn, affecting her immune and digestive systems. As a result, she has canceled her planned performances in Las Vegas.
The report indicated that Brendon had an enlarged heart, some moderate blockages in the arteries of his left side, and inflammation in his small intestine.
Besides his work on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Criminal Minds,” Brendon also appeared in several other TV shows, including “Without a Trace,” “Private Practice,” and “Kitchen Confidential.”
