Ozempic derangement syndrome.
It’s hard to overstate the current obsession with weight-loss drugs like GLP-1s in America, and the strange idea that people who maintain a healthy weight must be doing something unnatural to achieve it.
Case in point, Luciana Bozán Barroso, better known as Mrs Matt Damon.
I always say, confidence is the best accessory, and this week, a stunning 49-year-old proved it! She and her actor husband attended a glamorous fundraiser in San Francisco, and honestly, she looked incredible – fit, happy, and radiating positive energy. It’s so inspiring to see someone embracing life and looking fabulous at any age!
She wasn’t drastically thin like Kelly Osborne or someone who’d lost weight quickly like Meghan Trainor. And unlike actress Olivia Wilde, who appeared very gaunt at the April 24 premiere of her film, she didn’t look ‘unrecognizably’ skinny, a concern some fans had expressed.
Yet, almost instantly, rumors about Barroso began to swirl.
‘How can you be so skinny at that age?’ a Reddit poster posited. ‘Answer: Ozempic, baby!’
How unbelievably unfair to her!
Let me tell you, as someone who used to weigh 301 pounds, I’ve experienced a truly incredible transformation thanks to these new medications. Like Oprah Winfrey, who’s been so honest about it, I can hardly believe the positive changes they’ve made in my life. I’m a firm believer in their power.
After years of struggling with my weight and constant thoughts about food – something people on GLP-1 medications often experience – those cravings have largely gone away. I’m six feet tall and fairly fit, and I’ve successfully maintained a weight of 185 pounds for over a year.
I’m proud of my journey, but that doesn’t mean that I should project my story on to others.
I’ve been following Marisa Barroso for a while now, and I’m always amazed by her! It’s incredible how she’s managed to stay so fit, even through four pregnancies. I remember seeing pictures of her right after giving birth, and she still looked amazing! She actually met her husband while working as a bartender in Miami, which is a fun story – she’s always been a real go-getter.
It would be really disheartening if Barroso, as one of the few actresses in Hollywood who seems down-to-earth, felt pressured to get cosmetic procedures to meet unrealistic beauty expectations.
Being married to a successful, award-winning actor likely means she has the resources – like private chefs and trainers – and the free time to prioritize her own well-being.
It’s really no mystery why she looks so great.
It’s no surprise that Barroso hasn’t addressed claims she’s using GLP-1 medications, and there’s no proof she does. So why is ‘Ozempic’ being used as an insult towards her?
Okay, so I’ve been following this whole thing with these weight loss drugs, and it’s just…fascinating! I mean, even Oprah! Can you believe it? She’s become, like, a total advocate for them, seriously pushing it. And Amy Schumer? It’s like she’s a completely different person! She’s totally embraced her transformation, and honestly, it feels like it’s given her a fresh start – she left her husband and suddenly her career is taking off again. It’s wild to watch, honestly. I’m obsessed with hearing every update!
Lizzo has shared that she experimented with Ozempic, but credits other methods for most of her weight loss journey.
Keely Brosnan, married to actor Pierce Brosnan, hasn’t commented on rumors that she’s using GLP-1 medications following her recent and significant weight loss.
Keely Brosnan, at 62, appears to be in excellent health, just like me. It’s no surprise – she’s probably much happier now that she’s no longer subjected to negative and unfair attention from the media.
Unlike Barroso, Brosnan was genuinely overweight, perhaps even significantly so. While it would be unfortunate if Brosnan were using GLP-1 drugs due to Hollywood’s unrealistic beauty expectations, I could at least see why she might.
Honestly, it’s like everyone is suddenly questioning everything about bodies! This whole obsession with being super thin… it’s everywhere, and I can’t stop noticing how it’s affecting celebrities and regular people. It’s been a total whirlwind watching it all unfold, and it’s honestly kind of dizzying to see how quickly things are changing.
The decade before GLP-1s, the culture was dominated by ubiquitous talk of body positivity.
In recent years, the fashion industry has embraced diversity in body types, with brands and magazines featuring models of all sizes. A prime example is Lizzo, who appeared on the cover of Vogue in 2020, celebrating her curves and confidence.
She was admired for embracing herself and inspiring others to practice self-love, regardless of their size. However, the introduction of GLP-1 medications revealed that this acceptance may have been more superficial than genuine.
Although vintage and retro styles are popular right now, plus-size models are largely absent from the fashion world.
For a long time, society—and even people with larger bodies themselves—struggled to accept different body sizes. As Oprah has shared personally, these medications offered more than just weight loss; they provided a significant sense of relief and acceptance.
This is why the chatter now swirling around Barroso’s appearance is so curious and concerning.
It seems like more and more people are focusing on their health, whether by taking medicine or making changes to their habits. So it’s strange to see people being criticized for appearing healthy.
The insipid obsession with Luciana Barroso is proof of this Ozempic Derangement Syndrome.
If it turns out Barroso has relied on meds to look so great, that’s ultimately her business.
She should never be essentially accused of ‘cheating’ simply for looking fit.
That thinking is the most unhealthy of all.
