Evangelion Is Officially Crossing Over With Final Fantasy in 2026

is set to step into the world of Final Fantasy XIV for what might be the game’s best expansion yet.

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, producer and director Naoki Yoshida announced the next big update for the game: Evercold. This expansion will include significant changes to existing game features, as well as a new alliance raid series based on Evangelion, titled Ghosts of Desire.

Evangelion Is Coming to Final Fantasy XIV

Details about the upcoming Evangelionthemed raid, Ghosts of Desire, are still limited, but it’s confirmed to be created with Khara, Inc., the studio behind the Rebuild of Evangelion* films. While the specifics of the raid are unknown, it’s expected to launch alongside a significant update to the game’s combat system.

Square Enix has announced that when Evercold launches, it will include two battle modes: Reborn and Evolved. Reborn Mode will use the existing combat and job system, while Evolved Mode will focus more on making each job feel unique.

This series has remained beloved by fans worldwide. What starts as a typical, exciting mecha anime quickly becomes incredibly surprising and complex, featuring twists and turns unlike anything seen before. It all leads to a memorable, though controversial, ending that has been revisited and altered multiple times over the years.

As a huge fan of both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Final Fantasy XIV, it’s amazing to see Khara, Inc. continuing to steer the Evangelion franchise forward! It’s a little bittersweet knowing the original company behind it all had to close its doors after about thirty years, but Khara is definitely keeping the spirit alive.

In December 2025, GAINAX Co., Ltd., the animation studio founded by Hideaki Anno, officially closed after nearly 42 years. Anno explained the closure stemmed from issues with how rights and materials were handled by previous management. They filed a lawsuit, which was settled in January 2023, with the former management acknowledging the claims and issuing an apology.

The Final Fantasy XIV — Evercold expansion is currently slated for release in January 2027.
