Just a month after winning an Oscar for playing twins in the highly praised horror film Sinners, Michael B. Jordan is set to star in a new version of a classic 1980s police show.
Michael B. Jordan, who was previously in discussions, is now officially confirmed to star in Miami Vice ’85, a new take on the classic Miami Vice TV show (according to The Hollywood Reporter). He’ll be acting alongside Austin Butler, with Jordan playing Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs and Butler as James ‘Sonny’ Crockett – roles famously portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the original series.
Joseph Kosinski, the director behind hits like Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, is planning to shoot Miami Vice ’85 on IMAX cameras. The film is currently scheduled to come out in 2027.

This film is Michael B. Jordan’s first starring role since he won an Academy Award. He also recently finished filming a new version of the classic 1968 heist movie, The Thomas Crown Affair, before the Oscars ceremony.
Jordan’s new movie is a romantic heist story about a billionaire who steals a priceless painting. Things get complicated when he finds himself playing a game of cat and mouse with an insurance investigator – and they start to fall for each other.

The film is written by Drew Pearce and features Adria Arjona alongside the lead actor. Taylor Russell, known for her role in Bones and All, was initially cast but left the project due to disagreements about the creative direction, according to Variety.

The film also features a strong supporting cast including Danai Gurira, known for her role in Black Panther, alongside Aubrey Plaza, Ruth Negga, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Pilou Asbæk, Aiysha Hart, and Paapa Essiedu.
Jordan’s film will be the second time this story has been adapted for the screen. The original, directed by Norman Jewison and starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, was first remade in 1999 by Die Hard director John McTiernan. That version featured Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo, and a return appearance by Faye Dunaway as the psychiatrist to the main character.
Miami Vice ’85 is released in cinemas on 6 August 2027.
