Danielle Fishel revisited her prom night by wearing the same dress she wore in 1999 and posing for a new photo with her prom date, Lance Bass.
They began dating when she was a high school senior and starring on the Disney Channel show Boy Meets World, and he was a popular singer with the boy band NSYNC.
Seven years after taking Fishel to prom, Bass publicly came out as gay. He later married actor and painter Michael Turchin.
I absolutely loved seeing this! Bass and Fishel, who are now 46 and 44, recreated their prom photo, and it’s just adorable. What makes it even better is that Fishel actually wore the same beautiful, off-white dress she wore to prom all those years ago!
Fishel shared a video of the reunion on Instagram, playfully writing in the caption that while her dress still fit, some of her past curves had apparently decided not to attend.
As someone who’s navigated a health journey myself – I had a couple of lumpectomies last year after a breast cancer diagnosis – I’ve been thinking a lot about comfort and how clothes fit. I mentioned in a recent video that one of my outfits felt a little more relaxed in the front than usual, and that’s just been my way of adjusting to feeling good and comfortable in my own skin.
She found her original prom dress from 1999 and, with some alterations and a little encouragement, was able to fit back into it.
Fishel and Bass retook their prom photo to help promote Fishel’s new appearance on the American Idol Podcast, which Bass hosts.
A few years back, Fishel and Bass shared that his hesitation to be intimate with her at prom was a key moment in him realizing he was attracted to men.
As a lifestyle expert, I remember the buzz around this couple back in the late 90s! It was so exciting when they announced in 2022 that they’re finally turning their incredibly popular 1999-2000 romance into a movie. Their story really captured everyone’s hearts, and I think a lot of us are eager to see it brought to life on the big screen.
According to Fishel, her relationship with Lance was incredibly close and affectionate, but it didn’t include romantic or physical intimacy.
I really held onto the hope that Lance and I would reconcile, get married, and start a family. But, I realized I wasn’t really his type, I guess,” she said with a laugh.
Bass said not being able to be intimate with Fishel on prom night was a turning point for him. It was the first step in a long process of self-acceptance, and he realized it was the beginning of a significant change.
Fishel remembered having a clear idea of how the evening would unfold, but Lance seemed anxious about it.
She recalled the night Lance often mentioned – the one where he believed his dishonesty with himself and others was causing her pain.
She explained that the difficult experience he had that night was essentially what led him to break up with her.
In July 2006, at age 27, actor Neil Patrick Harris publicly came out as gay on the cover of People magazine. At the time, he was dating Reichen Lehmkuhl, the winner of The Amazing Race and a former Air Force captain.
He began dating Michael Turchin in 2012, and they got engaged in 2013. They married at the Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles just five days before Christmas in 2014.
Two months after the wedding, a televised special aired on E! Entertainment Television, marking the first time a same-sex couple had married on cable TV in the U.S.
Bass and Turchin are still married. In October 2021, they became parents to twins, Violet Betty and Alexander James, born through surrogacy.
Following her relationship with Bass, Fishel began dating Tim Belusko, a college sweetheart she met when she started attending California State University, Fullerton at the age of 27.
Let me tell you, life takes some unexpected turns! I first got married back in 2013, but sadly, that didn’t last, and we went our separate ways after a couple of years. Thankfully, I found love again with Jensen Karp – he’s a really talented musician and producer. We tied the knot in 2018 and now we’re happily raising our two little boys, Adler, who’s six, and Keaton, who’s four. It’s a beautiful, blended life!
