Okay, so here’s the scoop – the planned Clueless reboot over at Peacock isn’t happening. Apparently, they’ve decided to shelve the project, which was going to bring Alicia Silverstone back! I was really excited about seeing her reprise her role, but it looks like that’s off the table for now. It’s a shame, but sometimes these things just don’t work out, even with a beloved ’90s classic.
According to sources who spoke with Variety on Thursday, the streaming service has cancelled plans to adapt the project, one year after it was first announced as being in development.
According to sources, the show could be revived by another company, with CBS Studios and Paramount reportedly showing interest in bringing it back.
Even though Peacock decided not to continue with the project, industry sources say the new show—based on the popular romantic comedy—is still likely to attract a lot of attention when pitched to other networks and streamers.
The movie, which also featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, and the late Brittany Murphy, will center around Alicia Silverstone’s character, Cher Horowitz, according to reports.
The Daily Mail has contacted Silverstone and Peacock for additional information about this story.
The project boasts several well-known figures, with Silverstone serving as an executive producer and Amy Heckerling – the writer and director of the 1995 film – also involved.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share that the creative team behind shows like Gossip Girl – Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – and Jordan Weiss, who brought us Dollface, are all writing and executive producing this new series. It’s a fantastic group with a proven track record, so I have high hopes for what they’ll bring to the table!
Silverstone expressed her enthusiasm about returning to her famous role as Horowitz in April 2025, after hearing about plans to revive the show.
She shared her excitement about the reboot on Instagram, writing ‘So thrilled!’ along with a link to an article and pictures and memes featuring her character.
Oh my gosh, I was reading about Alicia Silverstone, and she was talking about Clueless! She said she’s still shocked – after all these years, over thirty of them! – that people are still obsessed with the movie. It’s just… amazing to me that she’s surprised, because of course it’s still popular! It’s a classic! But it’s so sweet that she’s genuinely pleased it’s lasted this long.
Alicia Silverstone, known for her early work in Aerosmith videos, expressed her joy over the lasting appeal of ‘Clueless.’ She said, ‘It’s wonderful how much people still enjoy it – something I never anticipated.’
In 2020, Peacock considered a project focusing on the character Dionne from the Dash franchise, but it never moved beyond initial development.
The movie Clueless was inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Released in U.S. cinemas on July 19, 1995, it grossed over $56.8 million worldwide and helped launch Alicia Silverstone to stardom.
The movie centers around Cher, a popular and privileged student at Beverly Hills High who considers herself a skilled matchmaker. She starts by playing cupid and successfully sets up two of her teachers.
After doing well in cinemas, the film – starring Elisa Donovan, Donald Faison, Dan Hedaya, and Breckin Meyer – was quickly adapted into a television series.
Rachel Blanchard starred as Cher in a television adaptation of the film Clueless, which aired for three seasons, first on ABC and later on UPN.
The show was created by Heckerling and also included cast members from the original movie, like Dash, Faison, and Donovan.
