A movie combining the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe is looking more possible thanks to recent developments with both series. Transformers has been a popular movie franchise since 2007, starting with a film directed by Michael Bay that earned over $700 million worldwide. The films are based on the classic Hasbro toys and follow a group of alien robots that can transform into vehicles and bring their battles to Earth.
The first five Transformers movies, directed by Michael Bay, generally did well in theaters, with Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction each earning over $1 billion worldwide. After Bay finished directing, the series took a new direction with Bumblebee. Although it didn’t make as much money as the earlier films, Bumblebee received much better reviews from critics, currently holding a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes – making it the highest-rated Transformers movie. The franchise continued with Rise of the Beasts in 2023, followed by the animated film, Transformers One.
The G.I. Joe movies have had a more uneven track record compared to Transformers. The first two films, The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation, both performed well, earning over $300 million worldwide each. However, the most recent installment, Snake Eyes, only brought in around $40 million globally, despite costing $88 million to make.
Both the Snake Eyes and Transformers movie series are looking to regain momentum after their latest installments didn’t perform as well as hoped. While Transformers: One received good reviews, it still didn’t make much money, and Snake Eyes was a box office failure. Because both franchises are based on Hasbro toys and produced by Paramount, a crossover film could definitely happen, and a recent announcement suggests it’s becoming more likely.
Transformers And G.I. Joe Are Both Getting New Films
At CinemaCon 2026, several movie studios previewed their future films. Paramount announced they are working on new movies for both the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, as reported by IGN.
We don’t yet know what these projects are, but several options are being considered. A new movie in the Transformers series is supposedly in the works, though details are scarce. Another possibility is a sequel to either Rise of the Beasts or Transformers One. Although Transformers One didn’t perform well in theaters, it received positive reviews and could potentially be continued with a follow-up film.
The future of the G.I. Joe movie franchise is uncertain. Deadline reported that two separate films were being developed with Danny McBride and Max Landis, but Variety now says Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have cancelled Landis’ project. With the poor performance of Snake Eyes in theaters, the next G.I. Joe movie might be a complete restart of the series.
Their New Films Could Set Up The Crossover That Was Teased In Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
The ending of Rise of the Beasts hinted at a potential crossover with G.I. Joe, showing Anthony Ramos’ character being recruited to join the team after the defeat of Scourge and Unicron. While this tease happened almost three years ago, the project’s future remains uncertain. Director Steven Caple Jr. recently told ScreenRant that he has “big plans” for the crossover and confirmed it is still being developed.
I definitely still have ideas for future projects, but it’s too early to say what will happen. I’m not involved in the next Transformers movie right now, but it’s still being developed, so anything could change. You never know what might happen down the line.
According to Caple, the highly anticipated crossover movie isn’t likely to be the next installment in either the Transformers or G.I. Joe series. However, the project hasn’t been abandoned and is still being worked on. If the upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe movies perform well, Paramount may decide to greenlight the crossover film.
