The first look at the upcoming Practical Magic 2 trailer has excited fans, but many have been asking why Aidan Quinn isn’t back as his character, investigator Gary Hallet. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest – all stars from the original movie – will be returning when the sequel comes out on September 11th.
The cast also grew with the addition of Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, and Xolo Maridueña. However, some fans are puzzled by the absence of the actor who played Sally Owens’ love interest in the original movie.
During a CinemaCon presentation, as reported by Deadline, Sandra Bullock hinted that fans familiar with the original movie will likely understand the reasoning behind certain choices.

The 1998 movie Practical Magic centers on the Owens family, who are burdened with a curse: any man who falls in love with a woman in the family is doomed to die. Sally’s father and first husband both fell victim to this curse, but the film’s ending hinted that her partner, Gary, might have been spared.
In the preview, Sally states, “Everyone we love dies,” and Gillian, played by Nicole Kidman, responds with a darkly humorous remark: “A really horrible death. But it doesn’t exactly look good on a dating profile.”

Quinn told Spin 1038 that he won’t be in the next movie, and the filmmakers hadn’t even contacted him about it.
He shared that working with both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock was a great experience. He worked closely with Kidman, but found both actresses to be phenomenal and enjoyed their time together on set.

In an interview with People magazine about the upcoming sequel, Nicole Kidman described Sandra Bullock as feeling like a sister to her.
“I adore her, and she is so funny and so lovable. And we’re just having the best time together.”
She also highlighted the talented team behind the project, specifically praising director Susanne Bier. She noted Warner Bros.’ significant and helpful support throughout the film’s development and expansion.
We’ve assembled a fantastic cast, including the wonderful Joey King, who I’ve had the pleasure of working with previously. It’s a really talented group of women and men, all collaborating to explore the next chapter in the story of these witches.
Practical Magic 2 will be released in cinemas on 11 September.
