Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2
A recent development in the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters allows for a change to a significant detail established in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While the monitor screens in Godzilla: King of the Monsters helped expand the backstory of the Monsterverse’s Titans, they also created some restrictions, particularly for stories taking place before the events of that film.
In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, we learn that Monarch had already found 17 massive creatures – called Titans – besides Godzilla. They were tracking these Titans using research outposts located around the world, and the film reveals both the locations of these outposts and the official names Monarch gave to each Titan.
King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra are three of the seventeen total monsters. Three more – Scylla, Methuselah, and Behemoth – were first seen in the movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters. However, the fourth MUTO isn’t included in the seventeen because it wasn’t discovered until the film began.
Of the eleven remaining Titans, a few have already been revealed. Tiamat made a physical appearance in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Amhuluk, Abaddon, and Mokele-Mbembe have appeared in other official Monsterverse content. The other Titans have been named, but haven’t been shown on screen yet.
Because Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set before the events of the film, there are certain limitations to what the show can do. However, the choices made by Isabel Simmons could potentially alter those restrictions.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Reveals How The Past Can Be Changed
In the seventh episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, Kurt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, came close to drastically changing the past when he met his younger self at the Axis Mundi facility. Despite the opportunity, he chose not to interfere with events in his own life and even persuaded his younger self to let things unfold as they originally did, specifically regarding Keiko’s rescue.
Although Lee Shaw successfully prevented major alterations to the timeline, a change could still happen. Isabel Simmons has told Kentaro she intends to stop G-Day, and now she possesses Titan X’s egg. She might use the egg as part of her plan if she can get it inside Axis Mundi.
The Monsterverse Can Now Introduce New Titans And Change Key Details From King Of The Monsters
Actions within Axis Mundi could significantly alter the history of the Monsterverse, similar to how Cate accidentally called forth Titan X. Isabel Summons’ current plan might unintentionally awaken another Titan, and this new creature doesn’t have to be one of the seven still unaccounted for from King of the Monsters.
The Monsterverse has revealed other massive creatures, called Titans, that the organization Monarch was aware of before 2019 – including the Frost Vark, Endopede, and Ion Dragon. However, the Frost Vark and Endopede are now deceased, which explains why they weren’t featured in ‘King of the Monsters.’ The Ion Dragon was also critically injured by Godzilla and may not have survived.
Even if Isabel alters the past, even if her changes aren’t what she expects, future seasons of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters could directly disagree with events in King of the Monsters by introducing new Titans and letting them survive.
A key element limiting stories in the Monsterverse is that Godzilla wasn’t publicly seen between 2014 and 2019. Altering this established timeline could open up new possibilities, allowing for more creative freedom in how Titans behave in a potential third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
