DC Comics’ Kingdom Come, a landmark story from 1996, is still considered one of the most important and recognizable works the company has ever created. Set in the near future on Earth-22, the story follows the original generation of superheroes as they come out of retirement to confront a new wave of violent, ruthless heroes and try to inspire hope again. Kingdom Come is the definitive Justice League story, presenting complex and compelling alternate takes on beloved characters, often with striking new costumes that have become iconic in their own right.
The character designs in the comic Kingdom Come, beautifully illustrated in detail by renowned artist Alex Ross, aren’t just visually appealing—they often carry symbolic weight and reflect the story’s central ideas.
10) Nightstar

Nightstar, also known as Mar’i Grayson, stands out as a genuinely good and untainted hero among the new generation. As the daughter of the original Teen Titans members Dick Grayson (Red Robin) and Starfire, her background is steeped in legacy. Her costume beautifully combines elements of both parents: it has the flowing style of Starfire’s outfit but is mostly dark purple, a nod to the darker shades of Red Robin’s uniform. Every aspect of Nightstar’s appearance reflects her unique blend of alien and human ancestry.
9) Blue Beetle

Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, is known for building incredibly complex gadgets and vehicles to help him fight crime. So, in the alternate future of Kingdom Come, it makes sense he’d create a powerful, armored suit similar to Iron Man. This suit is powered by his magical scarab and gives him super strength and the ability to fly. The design is very unique and directly inspired by a rhinoceros beetle, featuring large horn-like structures, huge mechanical wings, and armor that looks like a beetle’s shell. It’s a remarkably creative take on the Blue Beetle concept and a very literal interpretation of the character’s origins.
8) Deadman

Alex Ross created a particularly unsettling depiction of the hero known as “Deadman.” Unlike typical ghostly portrayals, this version, from Earth-22, isn’t a pale imitation of a human. He’s completely skeletal, still wearing the red suit he died in. This design powerfully conveys Deadman’s acceptance of being a ghost and the mental toll of being lost between life and death for decades. The result is a truly frightening and alien appearance that makes this Deadman more chilling than ever before.
7) Red Robin

Typically, Dick Grayson transitions from being Robin to Nightwing as he matures. But in the world of Kingdom Come, he continues operating as Robin even into his forties. While previous attempts at an adult Robin costume haven’t been great, Dick’s Red Robin suit is a standout. It features a large black cowl and cape paired with a red chest, cleverly referencing the colors of a real robin and blending elements of both Batman and Robin’s costumes. The suit’s bird-shaped crest is a nod to the “R” logo from his original Robin outfit. The Red Robin identity and costume were so well-received that Jason Todd and Tim Drake later adopted similar looks in the main DC Universe.
6) Magog

Magog, a prominent anti-hero of the 1990s, was intentionally created as a critique of the era’s superhero tropes. Heavily inspired by characters like Cable, he embodies many over-the-top design elements: a metallic arm, one missing eye, exaggerated shoulder pads, and an abundance of belts and pouches. His blind right eye is shaped like the Eye of Ra, and his golden color scheme, combined with a horned helmet, references the biblical Golden Calf – a symbol of false worship. These choices were all meant to highlight how Magog and similar characters contributed to a darker, more cynical tone in comics, moving away from the traditional image of superheroes as beacons of hope.
5) Flash

Given how incredibly fast Wally West, also known as the Flash, is, it wasn’t surprising when he essentially became a god of speed. In the future depicted in Kingdom Come, Wally finally reached his full potential, becoming a constantly moving, almost everywhere-present red streak. His design, which vibrates constantly, glows red with heat, creates lightning, and radiates power, perfectly shows how he’s moved beyond being human and become a god. The winged cap is a nice nod to both the original Flash, Jay Garrick, and the Roman god Mercury, who was also known for his speed.
4) Batman

Let’s talk about Batman. Even the Dark Knight isn’t immune to the effects of time, and he’s definitely showing his age. For years, he’s been operating more as a strategist, using those incredible robot drones to handle the heavy lifting in Gotham while he directed things from the Batcave. But when things really hit the fan – that massive brawl between the Justice League and a whole prison full of supervillains – Batman didn’t hesitate. He unleashed a secret army of his own to stop both sides, preventing a global catastrophe. Now, he couldn’t exactly jump into the fray himself, so he did the next best thing: he wore this absolutely incredible power suit. We’re talking enhanced strength and, get this, massive mechanical wings! It was a fantastic visual, and it really hammered home the point: nothing, not even a failing body, will ever stop Batman from protecting Gotham. It’s a testament to his unwavering dedication.
3) Green Lantern

Alan Scott, the very first Green Lantern, is known for having one of the most iconic costumes. Unlike previous Lanterns, his power source wasn’t just a lantern; he redesigned it into a suit of armor he could wear. This armor, combined with his energy sword, gives him the look of a powerful, mythical knight. Beyond making him one of the strongest Green Lanterns across all realities, the suit represents a return to classic heroic ideals – something Alan and his new Justice League team are striving for in a world that has lost its sense of purpose.
2) Wonder Woman

As a huge Wonder Woman fan, I always get excited when she breaks out her gold armor! For most of the Kingdom Come story, she actually wears a classic costume, but it’s that gold armor that everyone remembers. It first appears during the big final fight, and it’s just stunning – it really makes her look like a warrior straight out of Greek mythology, almost like a golden eagle with huge metal wings. They even included an American flag draped over her shoulder, which is a cool nod to how she often represents American values. It’s become such a popular look that it’s shown up in the main DC comics a bunch of times, and even in the WW 1984 movie! Whenever you see Wonder Woman in that armor, you know she’s about to go to war.
1) Superman

Even now, many fans consider the Superman costume from Kingdom Come to be one of his best. It perfectly captures the story’s themes of a retired Superman returning to inspire hope in a cynical world. While it pays tribute to his traditional look, the costume’s darker colors and switch from yellow to black show how the world has changed him. Its distinctive logo has become incredibly popular, even influencing the design of the Superman logo for the upcoming 2025 movie. Overall, the costume for this version of Superman powerfully represents the central ideas of Kingdom Come.
