New Prince single released from his musical vault – How good is the song?

When Prince passed away in 2016, people estimated he had around 8,000 songs no one had ever heard. But honestly, I don’t think he intended for most of those to ever be released. If he really thought they were his best work, I’m pretty sure he would’ve put them out himself, right?

We know the artist was always experimenting and perfecting his music in his incredible studio, and the results are likely better than almost anything other musicians will ever record. That’s why fans are so eager to hear his unreleased songs.

So far, just over 100 songs have been released, the newest being “With This Tear.” The track was expertly mixed and mastered by Chris Jarnes, known for his work with Prince on albums like HITnRUN Phase Two, Art Official Age, and Plectrumelectrum.

Prince’s new single from his vault is a bit of a mixed bag

Jarnes really understands Prince’s vision for a song, and that’s a great starting point. But the big questions are: how good is this new version, and does it offer a different sound compared to Celine Dion’s recording from her 1992 album?

Don’t expect this song to be an upbeat dance track. It’s a slow, thoughtful tune, similar in tone to the version by Dion. The problem with Dion’s recording isn’t her voice, but the outdated sound production.

The music on this track from the early 1990s sounds a lot like the scene in Purple Rain where Prince and Apollonia are together in his room. Unfortunately, this makes the sound feel artificial and overly polished.

Fortunately, Prince’s latest release is simpler and focuses on piano. He’s in great voice, and his signature falsetto is instantly recognizable.

The string arrangement feels a little overdone. The song would have been stronger with just Prince playing piano and singing about his heartbreak. It seems his love interest has passed away, or something similar has occurred.

This song isn’t likely to reach the heights of Prince’s greatest hits, and it’s possible none of the unreleased tracks will. It’s still worth checking out, but be aware that while the piano and vocals are lovely, the lyrics are emotionally challenging.
