Does Anna Wintour have a cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2? Here’s the answer

Everyone’s eager to know if Anna Wintour, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue and organizer of the Met Gala, will make an appearance in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. Many have noted the resemblance between Wintour and the film’s character Miranda Priestly, and it’s well-known that the novel’s author, Lauren Weisberger, previously worked for Wintour.

With the new movie coming out, Anna Wintour has been talking a lot about the first film from 2006. She’s done some promotion with Meryl Streep, who played a character based on her, and even hinted she might be in the sequel. Now, we have the answer to whether she actually appears in it.

As it turns out, the answer is no.

Critics have begun to see the film, though so far they’ve only been able to share their general impressions, not complete reviews. It’s also been confirmed that Anna Wintour does not appear in a cameo role.

The Back Row podcast revealed through interviews with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna that she wasn’t consulted at all.

According to Frankel, it “felt too meta” to have Wintour in the fashion film.

Frankel shared that he did shoot a fun, playful scene with Wintour and the cast, which will be included as an extra feature on the film’s DVD or streaming release. He jokingly admitted the footage isn’t always clear because Wintour didn’t quite hit her mark, and he didn’t want to ask her to do it again.

“I didn’t want to do a second take,” he said. “I can’t ask Anna to do take two.”

Brosh McKenna clarified that the character of Priestly in the film wasn’t meant to be a direct portrayal of Anna Wintour. She explained that focusing on someone relatively unknown to the general public wouldn’t have been a smart creative choice at the time.

Brosh McKenna added: “It’s not interesting [to me] to do a direct one-to-one on anybody.”

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, filmed a cameo appearance, but it didn’t make the final cut of the movie. It’s possible her scene will be included in a future home release version.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in cinemas on 1 May.
