Markiplier has explained when his horror movie hit comes home.
Markiplier, the popular YouTuber, recently shared an update about his horror movie, Iron Lung, after its surprisingly successful run in theaters. The film, based on his own video game, has earned around $49 to $50 million worldwide. While critics had mixed reactions, audiences generally enjoyed the movie, which Markiplier directed, wrote, starred in, produced, and edited.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Markiplier recently announced that his indie horror film, Iron Lung, will be available to purchase and stream on YouTube. He’s not stopping there, though – he’s working on a system that would allow other YouTubers to release and sell their own movies on the platform. Markiplier says this system is almost ready, hinting that Iron Lung‘s digital release is coming soon.
Check out what Markiplier had to say below:
The digital release of Iron Lung has been delayed because I’ve been working on a way to become a distributor, which would help other creators release their games more easily. It’s a complex process with a lot of legal details and setup involved, but that’s what I’ve been focused on.
I’m in the last stages of getting everything ready, and it will soon be possible for me to offer movies for sale on YouTube.
Markiplier announced that he’s planning to release Iron Lung on DVD and Blu-ray. He’ll be personally creating the copies using his own equipment, allowing him to handle the distribution himself.
A horror movie released in 2026 became a big hit, paving the way for films starring popular Internet creators like Markiplier to reach wider audiences. Originally planned for limited release with a $3 million budget, strong demand led to the movie being shown in more theaters. It performed well at the box office, even competing with a film by Sam Raimi called Send Help. What made its success even more impressive was that it didn’t have the same level of advertising as many other major releases.
Markiplier’s plan to release Iron Lung online isn’t just about his own project; he’s paving the way for other YouTubers to release films and larger projects directly on the platform, giving them control over how their work is shared. Currently, YouTube’s movie section usually requires a studio or distributor. Markiplier aims to bypass that system, self-releasing his film and helping other creators do the same, essentially acting as a bridge between them and YouTube to make their content available for purchase.
Iron Lung is one of several movies soon to be released by YouTubers. Kane Parsons is directing a film based on his popular web series, The Backrooms, and Jacksepticeye is creating an animated Bloodborne movie. Markiplier’s horror film could be the beginning of a larger trend – YouTubers successfully transitioning into filmmaking and potentially changing how content is created on the platform.
