Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 4 finale of Will Trent, episode 16, “Our Last Dance.” Amanda Wagner‘s character has been killed off, and this decision, along with Sonja Sohn’s departure from the show, will significantly affect the direction of Will Trent in the future. This year has been difficult for strong leadership characters on TV; shortly after the death of Director Leon Vance on NCIS, the season finale of High Potential left Captain Nick Wagner gravely wounded after a stabbing.
The future remains unclear, but the show Will Trent experienced a similar heartbreaking event in its fourth season. Unlike the ending of Major Crimes, the loss on Will Trent is permanent. Wagner’s death was officially shown in the episode “Our Last Dance,” where the GBI team discovered Wilbur with her body. The autopsy revealed she died rapidly from her injuries. While these details are confirmed, it’s puzzling why the show would eliminate a beloved character, especially so soon after she overcame a life-threatening situation earlier in the season. However, there are two main reasons behind this decision.
Amanda Wagner’s Death Will Serve As A Reset For Will Trent
After the surprising events of the Will Trent season 4 finale, “The Blank Expanse of Nothing,” the show’s creators explained why they chose to kill off Amanda. Karine Rosenthal highlighted that Amanda was a key character for both Will and the other main characters, and her death will dramatically change the atmosphere at the GBI. They see this as the starting point for the storyline of season 5.
Amanda always looked out for Will, and her loss creates a big shift within the GBI. Her replacement won’t share that same history with him, leading to a new dynamic. Her death deeply affected everyone, leaving them heartbroken but also opening the door for fresh storylines and challenges in Season 5.
This explanation seems reasonable. It’s not uncommon for long-running police or crime shows to change up their cast, and it’s a way to keep the show interesting. However, even understanding that doesn’t make it any less upsetting to see a popular character like Amanda leave.
1 Network TV Trend Likely Also Motivated Sonja Sohn’s Will Trent Exit
There’s a possibility Amanda’s character was killed off due to budget cuts affecting many long-running TV shows. Networks like those airing Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, and The Rookie have already announced reductions for the upcoming 2026-2027 season, and Will Trent is likely facing similar issues. One way to save money is by eliminating highly-paid, regular cast members, and Sohn’s character may have been a casualty of this.
Following the reveal of Amanda’s stabbing, actress Janina Gavankar spoke out about her departure from Will Trent, confirming she didn’t choose to leave. She explained she was let go from the show, something she’s unfortunately experienced before during her long career in acting, and which she details in her upcoming memoir. Fans are deeply saddened by her exit, and whether the show can successfully move forward will depend on how her character’s departure is written into the story.
