Netflix’s Emmy-Winning Thriller Series Returns With 58% Viewership Drop For Season 2

The second season of Netflix’s hit show, Beef, is now available, but initial viewing figures show a decrease in the number of people watching compared to its first season.

Created by Lee Sung Jin, the darkly funny and dramatic series Beef became a huge hit for Netflix when it launched in 2023. Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the first season centers on two strangers whose lives fall apart after a simple road rage encounter. Critics loved the show, especially the acting and the writing.

Netflix’s latest rankings, published on their Tudum site, show that the second season of Beef started at number 10 on the Top 10 list, attracting 2.4 million viewers in its first week. This is a significant decrease from the first season’s debut, which had around 5.8 million views in its opening week – a drop of roughly 58%.

The first season was a huge success, receiving both popular and critical acclaim. It won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe awards and topped many “best of the year” lists. Currently, it boasts a 98% approval rating from critics and a 74% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 2 features Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny. The story centers on a young couple (Melton and Spaeny) working at a fancy country club in Ojai who see a troubling argument between their manager (Isaac) and his wife (Mulligan). The season will be told from different points of view, diving into various relationships and the conflicts within them.

One reason for the decline in viewers could be changes in the show’s style. Season 2 of Beef is reportedly more subtle and carefully paced, emphasizing the build-up of emotional conflict between characters instead of the fast-paced, explosive events that characterized the first season.

While critics are enjoying the more gradual pace of the new season, it might take longer for people to start talking about it compared to the first season, which immediately grabbed attention. The new cast could also be a reason for the lower initial viewership, as audiences get used to a different story without the original stars.

Okay, so everyone’s really loving season 2! Both critics and regular viewers seem to be on board, it’s sitting at an 86% score on the review site right now. What I’m hearing is that the new actors, especially Isaac and Mulligan, are killing it. Plus, people are saying the writing is super clever and the whole show just looks amazing – really atmospheric and well-directed.

Season 2 builds on the success of the first, while also offering a fresh take on the show. Although it didn’t immediately attract as many viewers as the first season, critics and audiences alike are responding positively, proving it’s still an important part of what Netflix offers.

Beef season 2 is available to stream only on Netflix.
