Ridley Scott’s The Martian Stays Strong on U.S. Streaming Chart

Even after more than ten years, Ridley Scott’s acclaimed film remains incredibly popular on streaming services.

The 2015 film The Martian is doing surprisingly well on demand. It’s currently the 17th most downloaded movie on Apple TV+ in the United States – that’s even more popular than newer releases like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Super Mario Bros. Movie! If you don’t want to rent or buy it, you can stream The Martian on AMC+.

The Martian Is a 10/10 Sci-Fi Movie

Even after eleven years, The Martian remains a highly regarded film. Based on Andy Weir’s novel, the story centers on astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) who is accidentally left behind on Mars when his team believes he has died. Completely alone and with no way to contact Earth, Watney must use his ingenuity to build a life for himself and survive the harsh Martian landscape.

As a big film fan, I remember when The Martian came out – everyone was talking about it! Critics absolutely loved it, with a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and regular viewers on IMDb gave it a solid 8 out of 10. Matt Damon’s performance as Mark Watney was so good he even got an Oscar nomination! Beyond the praise, it was a huge commercial success too, making over $630 million worldwide, which is amazing for a movie that wasn’t part of an existing franchise.

Ridley Scott, the director known for classics like Alien, truly shines with The Martian. The film benefits greatly from Andy Weir’s detailed research, though Scott does take some creative liberties. Released in 2015, it remains a celebrated and successful movie even today.

The Martian’s Legacy Lives Through Project Hail Mary

Though there isn’t a direct follow-up to The Martian, the 2026 science fiction film starring Ryan Gosling shares a similar spirit. Based on another novel by Andy Weir, it tells the story of Dr. Ryland Grace, an astronaut stranded in space with the incredibly difficult job of stopping a virus that could extinguish all stars. During his mission, he unexpectedly befriends an alien creature named Rocky, and together they work to save both of their worlds.

Similar to The Martian, Project Hail Mary has been a huge hit, reigniting excitement for science fiction. While recent box office numbers are still coming in, it likely won’t reach the same global success as The Martian. However, Project Hail Mary is just as well-received, boasting a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4/10 average score on IMDb.

Movies like The Martian and Project Hail Mary are exactly what cinema needs more of. They’ve both been very successful and are great at getting young audiences excited about science fiction.
