The 1970s were a hugely important decade for music, known for its incredible variety. From different genres to unique sounds and styles, the music of the ’70s was truly diverse. This is clear when you listen to the many classic albums released during that time. Every year brought a wealth of amazing music, which went on to inspire artists and shape the sound of music for decades.
Below, I’ve chosen a noteworthy example from each year of the 1970s. It’s important to note that this list is subjective, and people will likely have different opinions. I’m not saying these are the best or most important examples, just that they’re all solid choices.
Limiting the list to one album per year allows for a variety of genres and showcases the musical richness of the era. However, this also means tough choices had to be made. Some readers will inevitably disagree with certain selections, and others might feel their personal favorites are absent. Maybe a longer list of twenty albums would have been a better approach.
Ten influential 1970s albums
Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970)
Did Black Sabbath’s music kickstart the heavy metal genre? Many people believe their album and unique sound did just that, featuring Ozzy Osbourne’s vocals and Tony Iommi’s unforgettable guitar riffs. ‘Paranoid’ particularly defined the sound of the 1970s and continues to influence music today.
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (1971)
This album showcases a noticeably more refined sound from Marvin Gaye. It’s a soulful and jazzy work with meaningful lyrics that address important social and global issues. Gaye’s strong vocals, combined with beautiful orchestral arrangements, make this album truly exceptional.
David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)
David Bowie’s early work immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. It was a bold, energetic sound – a fresh take on rock that propelled him to stardom. For many, the album is tied to a specific, memorable moment in their lives.
Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
This album was a turning point for Pink Floyd, blending different musical styles in a way that hadn’t been done before. Its approachable and expansive sound contributed to the band’s widespread popularity. It’s a classic that still sounds great today and will be prominently featured on their upcoming compilation album in July.
Kraftwerk – Autobahn (1974)
This album was a pioneering step forward for electronic music. It combined keyboards, synthesizers, and a bit of pop sensibility, helping it stand out from the crowd. It’s amazing to think it came out in 1974, and it likely inspired many of the electro and techno artists who followed in the 1970s and beyond.
Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run (1975)
1975 saw a wealth of talented musicians emerge. Among them, Bruce Springsteen truly broke through with the release of Born to Run. The album remains a classic and inspired a generation of songwriters to share their raw, honest stories through music.
Stevie Wonder – Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
This album is incredible – a true masterpiece of soul and R&B, packed with hit songs! Stevie Wonder really shines on this fantastic double album. He was already a huge influence on other musicians, and Songs in the Key of Life only amplified that impact.
Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols (1977)
Punk rock exploded onto the scene in the 1970s, and the Sex Pistols’ 1977 album was a truly groundbreaking release. While not the very first punk album, it’s considered one of the most important, inspiring other bands and proving that punk could succeed on record.
Kate Bush – The Kick Inside (1978)
Kate Bush’s first album was a refreshing change from the punk and new wave music of the time. Her unique style of art rock stood out, proving that innovative and well-crafted music will always find an audience.
The Clash – London Calling (1979)
As the 1970s ended, punk rock continued to be influential. The Clash stood out by blending in elements of reggae and ska while maintaining the genre’s signature energy. This innovative approach paved the way for many musical styles in the 1980s and beyond.
