Alicia Vikander shares a rare insight into family life with Michael Fassbender as she says they’ve become ‘nomads’ and move between homes in FOUR different countries

Alicia Vikander recently opened up about what it’s like to be married to Michael Fassbender and raise a family in a new interview.

The 37-year-old Swedish actress and her 49-year-old actor husband got married in a private ceremony in Ibiza, Spain, in October 2017.

After meeting on the set of the movie The Light Between Oceans in 2014, the couple had their first son in 2021 and welcomed another baby boy earlier this year. They currently live in Lisbon, Portugal, with their two sons.

Even though they have a main home, Alicia and her partner are constantly on the move for work, jokingly referring to themselves as ‘nomads’ as they travel between their houses in four different countries.

The couple usually share childcare duties, with one parent staying home with their sons, who are about five and two years old, while the other is working on location.

Alicia told The Independent that she and her family travel frequently. They’ve spent considerable time in cities like Lisbon, London, and various locations in Italy and France, describing themselves as nomads.

She added: ‘That’s the hard part with work, we can’t plan far ahead.’ 

This follows Alicia’s candid discussion about co-parenting with her husband and her struggles with feeling guilty as a mother.

The actress shared these unusual thoughts while posing for a photoshoot with British Vogue, shortly before she began performing in a West End play last year.

Alicia acknowledged that she and her husband both have demanding jobs, but they prioritize ensuring one parent is always home with their children by never working at the same time.

The job often involves really long days, meaning you might leave before your children wake up and not return until after they’re asleep. It’s reassuring to know one parent is always there for them. I struggle with the usual parental guilt that comes with balancing work and family, and it’s something I’m constantly dealing with.

She described their life in Lisbon after moving to Portugal, explaining that her husband wanted to surf daily. They make sure to spend weekends at the beach with their children whenever they visit.

She also shared how becoming a mother transformed her, admitting she used to be afraid of having children, but now loves being a mom.

I didn’t feel naturally maternal until I became a mother myself. It was especially after my second child was born that I started to feel more confident and capable. I’ve also become more understanding and forgiving towards myself.

In 2024, Alicia announced that she and her husband, Michael, had quietly welcomed another child – a son. They haven’t shared his name yet.

Taylor Russell, who acted alongside Alicia Vikander in the movie Hope, told ELLE UK she was amazed by Alicia’s dedication to the physical demands of the role, especially considering Alicia had recently given birth to her second child.

The Swedish star explained that every woman’s experience is unique, and she found going through it a second time particularly challenging.

She added that the training process really helped. She compared the nine months of preparation to running a marathon, explaining that being in good shape beforehand makes it much easier.

‘It’s so physically demanding, and I have so much admiration for any woman who has done it.’

Alicia explained that she’d acted out childbirth scenes four times before becoming pregnant herself. She admitted feeling like a fraud each time, saying, ‘As an actor, your job is to pretend, but every time I had to portray giving birth, I apologized to all the women on set.’
