Madonna shares photos from her ‘moment in history’ with Sabrina Carpenter after suffering ‘ageist and misogynistic’ backlash from indifferent Gen Z Coachella crowd

Madonna celebrated what she called a ‘historic moment’ with Sabrina Carpenter on Monday night, following criticism of their performance at the Coachella festival which led to some people suggesting she should retire.

The pop icon joined Carpenter on stage at the yearly California event to perform her classic hits “Like A Prayer” and “Vogue,” which were both originally released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The 67-year-old singer took the stage in a silk basque and stockings, but the audience seemed surprisingly neutral – and many didn’t seem to know the words to her popular songs.

Videos from the concert show a noticeably flat atmosphere. While Madonna made a surprise appearance, most of the audience seemed more interested in recording it on their phones than singing along – only a few fans joined in on ‘Like A Prayer’.

Even though the reaction wasn’t very enthusiastic, Madonna celebrated performing with Carpenter by posting photos from backstage and several pictures of their short performance together.

Okay, I’m still completely buzzing from Friday night at Coachella! Seriously, seeing Sabrina bring ‘Confessions II’ back to life, especially at Coachella where it all started… it was just everything! I can’t even explain how amazing it was to witness. Thank you, Sabrina, and everyone involved – you made a dream come true!

A moment in history, I will never forget! I FEEL SO FREE.’

Fans quickly came to Madonna’s defense after she faced criticism online for her outfit – racy purple lingerie – and calls for her to retire. They labeled the criticism as both ageist and sexist.

One fan shared on X: ‘Madonna is thriving! Only people who are prejudiced against older women and feel threatened by successful women are upset that she’s still pursuing her passions. If you don’t enjoy her music, simply ignore it – she’s doing just fine without your support.’

As a lifestyle observer, I have to say, Madonna truly is an icon! She’s a legend, a superstar, and honestly, she looks and performs incredibly well. It’s amazing to see her energy – she moves like someone decades younger! She really knows how to command the stage.

Someone else commented, expressing frustration that discussions about X had turned into criticism of Madonna. They defended her, saying she deserves to live her life as she chooses.

Honestly, I was so thrilled to see Madonna perform! I saw so many comments saying she’s still completely selling out shows, and that’s so true – clearly, a lot of us still adore her. I thought she was incredible, and I’m hoping I look half as good when I’m 67! To me, true legends remain legends for life, and I know I’m not the only Madonna fan who thinks she should keep doing her thing.

Madonna appeared near the end of Carpenter’s performance, marking her return to Coachella two decades after her incredibly successful 2006 show.

According to Page Six, she surprised the audience by appearing from under the stage to perform a mashup of her classic songs ‘Vogue’ (1990) and ‘Like a Prayer’ (1989), accompanied by pre-recorded vocals.

Walking further onto the stage, closer to the audience, she exclaimed, ‘Wow, thank you! Sabrina, I really appreciate you having me on your show.’

Madonna encouraged the audience to unite and put aside their differences, explaining that music has the power to connect people.

Her comeback performance was also tainted by claims she was lip-syncing the whole way through.

Madonna is facing accusations of using a pre-recorded vocal track, leading some to call it a ‘fraud.’ This comes ahead of the release of her new album, ‘Confessions II,’ on July 3rd.

A frustrated fan reminded everyone of a famous incident from 2004 when Elton John publicly criticized Madonna, claiming she was pretending to sing live.

Back in 2012, Elton John publicly criticized Madonna, calling her performance style cheap and describing her as difficult to work with. He also criticized artists who pretend to sing live. This sparked a long-running disagreement between the two stars, which they finally resolved in 2023.

People who saw Friday night’s show in the California desert agreed, and many had strong opinions about Carpenter as well.

‘Madonna WAS “helped” by a very high volume backing voice track,’ one commented on X.

Some people might say it was lip syncing, and I wouldn’t argue with that. However, Sabrina did the same thing during her performance. But honestly, Coachella has become more about the spectacle than a truly live concert experience.

Someone noted that Madonna appeared to be lip-syncing while Sabrina sang along to the music. Another person agreed, saying Sabrina’s vocals sounded fantastic.

Someone commented, ‘Even older people are allowed to have dreams… but I was really disappointed with Madonna’s lip-sync performance.’

One commenter believes the singer was lip-syncing, pointing out the vocals didn’t align with their mouth movements. They also stated Madonna isn’t a strong singer and suggests her success is due to her attention-grabbing costumes and behavior, implying she wouldn’t be well-known otherwise.

Another added: ‘Madonna lip-syncing while Sabrina live-singing. Terrible song. It’ll go nowhere.’
