I’m really not surprised to see that’s doing so well on streaming! Even though it didn’t do great in theaters, it’s clearly found a huge audience now that people can watch it at home. It’s awesome to see it getting the love it deserves!
Wow, 2023 was packed with Stephen King movies and shows, and The Running Man was the last one to come out, hitting theaters on November 11th. Honestly, it didn’t do well at first and quickly moved to digital release in December. But things really turned around once it landed on Paramount+ in January! Now it’s even available on Prime Video, which is awesome – I’ve been checking the numbers on FlixPatrol and it’s clearly finding its audience now.
The movie The Running Man had a strong start, opening in fifth place. Although it hasn’t broken any box office records, it’s clearly still very popular with viewers. Currently, The Running Man is performing very well on Paramount+, ranking third in the U.S. behind Primate and Top Gun: Maverick.
What Happens in The Running Man?
Based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel (originally published under the name Richard Bachman), The Running Man is set in the near future. The story centers on a popular game show of the same name, which is actually a dangerous and deadly contest. Participants, called Runners, must survive for a month while being hunted by professional killers, all broadcast to a captivated and bloodthirsty audience.
This science fiction movie centers around Ben Richards, an ordinary worker who enters a competition hoping to get help for his ailing daughter. The competition’s ruthless organizer didn’t count on Ben becoming popular with viewers due to his surprising abilities.
Edgar Wright, the director behind films like Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, directed The Running Man, and also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bacall. Glen Powell, known for his roles in Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick, stars as Ben Richards, supported by a talented cast including William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Sean Hayes, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin.
The Running Man Changed the Original Ending
The 1987 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t a close adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 book, as it made significant changes. The 2025 film was more true to the source material, but it still altered a key element: the ending.
Stephen King often writes stories with dark and unhappy endings, and The Running Man is no exception. In the book, the protagonist, Ben Richards, suffers a tragic fate: his wife and daughter are murdered, and he ultimately dies in a plane crash while destroying the headquarters of the show he was forced to participate in, along with the cruel executive producer, Dan Killian.
We initially wrote the story with Sheila and Cathy dying. However, once we started casting actors for those roles, it became clear that actually showing their deaths would have been too harsh and difficult to do, even if it had remained in the script.
The story doesn’t kill off Richards, offering a more optimistic conclusion. The writer explained they always intended for him to be the catalyst for change, even from the first draft. He also felt it would have been insensitive to stick with an earlier version of the story, as it reminded him of the events of 9/11, a topic that wasn’t even considered during the writing process.
The Running Man is streaming on Paramount+ and Prime Video.
