In the grand theater of absurdity that is our modern world, behold the latest act-Grinex, the beleaguered crypto exchange, has taken a spectacular plunge into the abyss just days after its birth! A mere whelp in the realm of digital currencies, it has already earned a reputation for misfortune, having suffered a catastrophic cyber assault that left its users bereft of over a billion rubles. Ah, the sweet taste of irony!
Claiming to be the victim of a ‘targeted operation,’ Grinex has pointed fingers at foreign intelligence agencies, as if the shadowy figures from spy novels were lurking behind their screens. The audacity! Such advanced resources, they say, typically reserved for state-backed actors, have been unleashed upon them. One can only wonder if the attackers wore capes and twirled their mustaches while plotting this dastardly deed!
And what did our dear Grinex do in response to this calamity? Why, it decided to suspend operations, of course! Because what else can one do when faced with such overwhelming adversity? Surely, shutting the doors and turning off the lights is the best way to solve the problem of losing vast amounts of money.
The Unveiling of the Laundering Route
In a show of transparency that could rival a magician’s greatest tricks, Grinex has promised to hand over all relevant information to the authorities. A criminal complaint has been filed, as if that will magically recover the lost funds! With damages estimated at around 13.74 million USDT, one must ask: is there enough sarcasm in the world to cover this mess?
The esteemed blockchain analysts at TRM Labs have uncovered connections that would make anyone’s head spin-about 70 addresses tied to the hack, which is 16 more than what our dear Grinex had the gall to admit. All the stolen assets, it seems, were transformed into TRX through SunSwap, before being funneled into a single TRON address. A neat little trick, wouldn’t you say?
Moreover, TokenSpot, suspected to be a front for Garantex, also found itself caught in the web of deceit at the same time. Two wallets from this platform, it appears, sent funds to the very same consolidation address used by Grinex-linked wallets. Coincidence? Or the work of a master puppeteer pulling the strings from the shadows? Both exchanges went offline on April 15, suggesting they were victims of the same malevolent force. Perhaps they should have consulted a fortune teller before diving into the crypto pool!
Grinex emerged from the ashes of Garantex, which had been shut down by law enforcement in March 2025, just months before. How poetic! Telegram channels, those bastions of truth, began promoting Grinex as its predecessor’s ‘safer’ alternative, urging former customers to migrate and reclaim their frozen fortunes. The old ‘switcheroo’-a classic move in the game of digital deception!
And what do you know? The U.S. Treasury, in its infinite wisdom, promptly slapped sanctions on Grinex and its associates, including the notorious issuer of the A7A5 token, Old Vector. Before its untimely demise, Garantex had processed over $100 billion in transactions while under sanctions since 2022. Quite the achievement for an establishment seemingly allergic to survival!
Yet, the saga does not end here! Reports reveal that illicit crypto inflows surged dramatically in 2025, with a staggering $158 billion flooding into dubious wallets. This unfortunate trend is largely attributed to activities linked to Russia and, let’s not forget, enhanced tracking methods. Despite this deluge of dubious dealings, illicit transactions account for a mere 1.2% of total on-chain volume. A small comfort, wouldn’t you agree?
A7A5, the ruble-pegged stablecoin issued by Old Vector, played a starring role in this tragicomedy, bringing in about $72 billion of incoming value. The A7 wallet cluster contributed another $39 billion, most of which was associated with our dear friends Garantex, Grinex, and A7. It seems that in this world of digital currency, the only constant is chaos-and perhaps a hint of farce.
