Even though we’re only halfway through the 2020s, the decade has already given us a lot of fantastic comedy movies. We’ve seen both critically praised films and huge box office successes, but some of the very best comedies have flown under the radar.
Most people are familiar with popular comedies from recent years, like Barbie, The Banshees of Inisherin, No Hard Feelings, Palm Springs, and The Naked Gun. While those films were very successful in theaters and on streaming platforms, and received positive reviews, there are still many other great comedies out there worth watching.
Many of these funny movies weren’t hits in theaters, though some did well on streaming services. Despite this, they still don’t get the recognition they deserve. The films boast impressive casts, including well-known actors like Rachel McAdams and Saoirse Ronan, alongside up-and-coming talents such as Haley Lu Richardson and David Jonsson.
This collection includes a wide range of comedic styles, from sports comedies to romantic and mysterious ones. No matter your preference, these movies are all highly enjoyable for comedy lovers. They’re truly underrated and deserve to be recognized as some of the best comedies of the last ten years.
Eephus (2024)
Many great sports movies have been made over the years, and Eephus is a standout, even though it’s largely unknown. Set in Massachusetts, the film centers on a group of amateur baseball players as they prepare for one last game before their beloved field is torn down.
This movie is full of heart and a real love letter to baseball, which fans will appreciate. It’s funny because the characters aren’t skilled athletes – their lack of ability is part of the charm. It’s a surprisingly great film, currently boasting a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – a true hidden gem!
Unpregnant (2020)
As a movie fan, I’ve noticed a trend lately, and Unpregnant definitely fits into it. It’s a story we’ve seen a couple of times now – think Plan B or Never Rarely Sometimes Always – where two teenage girls hit the road to find a state where one of them can safely and legally get an abortion without needing her parents’ permission. It’s a really relevant and important story being told, but it’s not exactly a new concept in recent films.
The movie Unpregnant is funny because of the wild and unexpected scenarios the main characters find themselves in, but it’s really about the strong bond that develops between them. Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira have great chemistry together, and Giancarlo Esposito makes a memorable, funny appearance.
See How They Run (2022)
See How They Run is a funny and unusual take on the classic mystery. The movie is set in 1950s London’s theater district and follows an inspector and his eager assistant as they investigate a murder on a movie set. The investigation itself is full of humor.
What truly makes See How They Run special is the chemistry between Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan. They’re captivating together, making any scene they share a delight to watch. The film also features a fantastic supporting cast, including Adrien Brody and Ruth Wilson.
Fire Island (2022)
Jane Austen’s stories, particularly Pride & Prejudice, have been adapted for film and television many times. A recent and unique take is Fire Island, which reimagines the classic with a group of gay friends vacationing on New York’s Fire Island.
With Joel Kim Booster playing Elizabeth Bennet and Conrad Ricamora as Mr. Darcy, Fire Island offers a fresh and engaging take on the classic story. Though the film was popular with both viewers and critics when it premiered on Hulu, it hasn’t received much attention since, even years later.
Do Revenge (2022)
Despite being popular when it first appeared on Netflix, Do Revenge seems to have faded from memory recently. That’s unfortunate, as the movie boasts some truly funny performances, especially from Sophie Turner, who shines as the wealthy Erica Norman.
In the movie Do Revenge, Drea (Camila Mendes) teams up with Eleanor (Maya Hawke), an outsider, to get back at the people who have wronged them at their exclusive high school. It’s a fun film that clearly draws inspiration from iconic teen movies like Mean Girls and Heathers.
Theater Camp (2023)
Molly Gordon has quickly become a familiar face in recent years, appearing in popular projects like Shiva Baby, Booksmart, and The Bear. But beyond acting, she’s also a talented writer and director – she co-wrote and co-directed the highly praised film Theater Camp.
This movie is based on a popular short film and tells the story of a struggling theater camp and its counselors, who stage a show to save it. Starring Gordon, along with Ben Platt, Jimmy Tatro, and Ayo Edebiri, it’s become one of the most critically acclaimed comedies of late.
One Of Them Days (2025)
People are saying that One of Them Days is a lot like the classic 1995 comedy Friday, and that’s a good thing! Friday is a hilarious movie that launched a whole series, and One of Them Days follows a similar format by showing everything that happens in just one day.
Dreux and Alyssa find themselves in a series of funny and chaotic situations as they scramble to pay their rent and avoid eviction. Keke Palmer delivers a standout performance as the main character, and SZA is impressive in her first film role. With a sequel now in the works, there’s even more reason to watch the original movie.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (2023)
Similar to the novels of Jane Austen, Judy Blume’s books have been made into movies several times. The film version of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is considered the strongest adaptation and stands out as one of the best coming-of-age movies in recent years.
The story follows young Margaret as she navigates the challenges of growing up and adjusting to life in a new state. The film, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, currently holding a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Abby Ryder Fortson delivers a fantastic performance in the lead role, and Rachel McAdams is brilliant as her mother.
S#!%house (2020)
Cooper Raiff is a promising young filmmaker. Still under 30, he’s already directed two impressive feature films and a well-regarded miniseries, with more projects in development. He first gained attention with his film, S#!%house.
S#!%house follows Alex, a college freshman trying to find his way. His life takes a turn when he meets Maggie at a fraternity party, and they quickly connect. Ben Raiff plays Alex and Dylan Gelula shines as Maggie, and their chemistry is fantastic.
Rye Lane (2023)
Like Richard Linklater’s wonderful Before trilogy, Rye Lane succeeds by focusing on a simple story. The film centers on Dom and Yas, who both recently went through breakups and unexpectedly meet each other.
The two characters spend the day together, navigating some funny and awkward moments while really getting to know each other. Their conversations are captivating, and the connection between actors Vivian Oparah and David Jonsson is undeniable – they have fantastic chemistry! This strong connection is likely a major reason the film has earned such high praise, with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
