The bond between a mentor and student is a classic theme in stories. We often see experienced masters sharing their knowledge with promising learners, hoping to pass on valuable skills. Occasionally, a student will even exceed their teacher, using that foundation to achieve even greater things. But the true challenge for a student isn’t about overcoming their mentor – it’s about discovering and proving their own potential.
I’ve noticed a common theme in anime: the student surpassing the master. It’s not just about getting close in skill, but often about heroes becoming powerful enough to defeat the legendary figures who trained them. Whether they’re skilled samurai or ninja, these characters take what they learn and build upon it, sometimes even becoming drastically stronger than their teachers – strong enough to even defeat or surpass them in power.
Gohan Grows to Outmatch Piccolo Completely
It’s rare for anime characters to dedicate themselves to raising another’s child, but Piccolo did just that with Goku’s son, Gohan. He became a demanding and unwavering teacher. Early in their training, Piccolo realized Gohan possessed immense, potentially dangerous power. To stop Gohan from uncontrollably transforming into a powerful ape, Piccolo made the drastic decision to destroy Earth’s moon, hoping to avert an even larger disaster.
Throughout Dragon Ball Z, Gohan steadily grows much stronger. As he matures, he becomes more powerful than almost everyone else, even those who once trained him. If Gohan and Piccolo were to truly battle, Gohan’s natural Saiyan strength and ability to transform would likely be overwhelming for the Namekian.
Naruto Uzumaki Ultimately Becomes the Greatest Hokage to Ever Live
Naruto Uzumaki is an exceptionally gifted ninja with incredible natural talent. Even before the powerful Nine-Tailed Fox was sealed inside him, he possessed immense, hidden strength, thanks to his parents – the Third Hokage and a member of the strong Uzumaki clan. With training from Kakashi Hatake starting at a young age, Naruto quickly surpassed his teacher’s abilities, becoming remarkably powerful as a teenager.
Naruto’s next teacher was Jiraiya, a legendary ninja known for his incredible strength – even greater than Kakashi. Jiraiya taught Naruto the Rasengan, a powerful technique, but Naruto eventually became even stronger. While they never fought each other, Naruto ultimately outgrew his teacher’s abilities. Ultimately, even Jiraiya, a highly respected and powerful ninja, couldn’t defeat the reincarnation of Asura Ōtsutsuki.
Ichigo Kurosaki Is a Genetic Anomaly with Unrivaled Potential
Throughout the series Bleach, Ichigo receives guidance from many people, but Kisuke Urahara had a particularly strong impact on his early growth. Urahara pushed Ichigo through intense training, which ultimately awakened his hidden powers as a Soul Reaper, enabling him to face the dangerous world of Hollows and survive.
Throughout the series, Ichigo discovers his unique lineage, unlocking incredible powers that are hard to fathom. Being descended from both Quincy and Soul Reapers gives him access to a wide range of abilities, and his Hollow powers further amplify his already immense strength. By the end, Ichigo is powerful enough to confront any threat. Although Urahara is a brilliant strategist, he wouldn’t stand a chance against Ichigo in a head-to-head battle.
Tanjiro Kamado Surpasses the Hashira in Strength
Tanjiro Kamado starts his training with Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Water Hashira. Urokodaki teaches him Water Breathing, which allows Tanjiro to join the Demon Slayer Corps. Though once a powerful fighter, Urokodaki isn’t as strong as he used to be, and Tanjiro eventually surpasses him. Once Tanjiro awakens his Demon Slayer Mark, the power difference between them becomes significant.
Throughout the series, Tanjiro receives training from various masters. However, even the strongest Demon Slayers eventually find themselves surpassed by a descendant of Sumiyoshi Kamado. Sumiyoshi Kamado was a legendary warrior from the past, and his unique Sun Breathing technique is initially baffling to experienced Demon Slayers, but is eventually learned by one of his relatives by the end of the anime.
Gon Freecss Trades His Future for Untold Power
Gon Freecss started as a naturally gifted fighter, but he truly began to grow when Wing, a skilled teacher, trained him in Nen. Learning about Nen – the energy system that powers battles in Hunter x Hunter – helped Gon develop his existing talents. He continued to improve dramatically when he trained with Kite later in the series.
During the fight with the Chimera Ants, Gon unlocked a hidden power that surprised even his teachers. Driven by fury and a need for revenge against Neferpitou, Gon made a dangerous promise using his Nen ability. He willingly gave up his future potential to instantly become strong enough to defeat Pitou, the ant who had killed his mentor.
Deku Becomes a Greater Hero than His Hero
Izuku Midoriya starts out unable to use any special powers, but his life takes a turn when All Might selects him to inherit the powerful Quirk, One For All. With All Might as his teacher, Deku begins learning to control this incredible ability, which once made All Might the world’s greatest hero. It’s a difficult process, demanding both incredible strength and willpower.
It’s incredible to watch Deku grow! He’s not just getting stronger with One For All, he’s actually discovering things about it that even All Might didn’t know! By accessing the Quirks of past users, Deku’s abilities are expanding in ways we never imagined, giving him a totally unique fighting style. Honestly, it’s wild to think that one day, a fully realized Deku could potentially surpass the very hero who believed in him from the start!
Jin Tragically Does Kill His Master
Unlike many anime heroes who don’t face their mentors in battle, Jin unfortunately has to fight his own teacher. Jin is an incredibly skilled swordsman and quickly becomes better than his master. He’s then given a dangerous mission: to kill his teacher as part of a larger plot. The fight is short and intense, and ultimately, Jin’s teacher is defeated.
The duel between Jin and his mentor was brief, but it changed Jin’s life forever. Despite being caught off guard, Jin defeated his teacher with skill and composure. However, he struggled with the consequences to his honor and standing. This fight was a defining moment for Jin, and a deeply sorrowful one.
Edward Elric’s Understanding of Eldritch Truth Makes Him Nearly Unbeatable
Through harsh training with the master alchemist Izumi Curtis, Edward and Alphonse quickly grow into exceptionally skilled alchemists in the country of Amestris. Edward’s talent leads him to become the youngest person ever to achieve the rank of State Alchemist. Known as the Fullmetal Alchemist, he joins the military as a teenager and continues to hone his abilities.
Edward’s talent for Alchemy stems from his grasp of a profound and mysterious principle called “the Truth,” which he first began to understand after an encounter with a godlike being in another world. While Izumi Curtis also understands this principle, Edward’s exceptional ability at such a young age suggests he could become one of the most powerful alchemists ever, even surpassing his teacher.
Goku Eclipses His Mentors by Orders of Magnitude
When people talk about sheer strength in anime, Goku is the character everyone compares others to. Throughout the Dragon Ball series, he’s become stronger than all of his teachers while striving to be the very best. He first learned the basics of fighting from Master Roshi, but once he outgrew those lessons, he trained with King Kai, who taught him
During the Dragon Ball Super storyline, Goku has become more powerful than all his previous teachers. He’s developed techniques like Ultra Instinct, allowing him to exceed the limits of even the strongest Saiyans. He now trains with Whis, an angel who oversees a God of Destruction. While Goku hasn’t yet mastered Whis’s level of strength, he’s outgrown his mentors before, and it’s likely he’ll do so again.
Monkey D. Luffy Could Pummel the Pirate King’s Right-Hand Man
Man, Silvers Rayleigh is a legend! Back in his prime, he was the most terrifying pirate on the Grand Line, only surpassed by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger himself. Even now, well past his fighting days, he’s still an absolute powerhouse. I’m so fascinated by how he’s taken Luffy under his wing and is teaching him Haki – it’s incredible to watch Luffy’s power grow with each lesson! Rayleigh really is a master of Haki, and it’s making a huge difference in Luffy’s journey.
Even though Luffy probably couldn’t win against a younger, prime Rayleigh, he might be able to defeat him now. After mastering Gear 5, Luffy became incredibly powerful, gaining the ability to bend reality and fight using the bizarre, unpredictable nature of his Devil Fruit.
