Henry Cavill recently finished playing a superhero in Zack Snyder’s DC movies, and while he’s moved on from that role, he remained interested in action and fantasy. After departing from The Witcher, he quickly found another exciting project in the action genre.
Henry Cavill will star as Connor MacLeod, the immortal blacksmith, in a reimagining of the classic film Highlander. Amazon MGM Studios recently showed off the first look at the movie during CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with Cavill presenting it via a video message filmed on set.
Highlander Is Henry Cavill’s Version of John Wick
This movie shares a lot with the popular John Wick series. It features a strong main character, and it’s directed by Chad Stahelski, who directed all four John Wick films.
Footage shown at CinemaCon featured a mix of scenes from the movie itself and behind-the-scenes footage. In one clip, Henry Cavill, playing his character, introduces himself: “I am Connor Macleod. I was born in 1518. And I am immortal!”
Henry Cavill shared an update on the film’s progress, saying they’re halfway through shooting and believe they’re making something remarkable. Filming for Highlander began in late January and has been a lengthy process so far. While they haven’t yet filmed in the Scottish Highlands, they plan to, along with locations in Hong Kong and Poland.
Later, the villain, The Kurgan, threatens Connor, saying, “You’ll watch as my sword alters the past, Highlander.” Connor simply responds, “Fine, whatever you say.”
The preview clip ended with a montage of various characters promising, “There can be only one.”
I’m so excited to see Russell Crowe back with Henry Cavill after they worked together on Man of Steel! He’s playing Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez in Highlander – an older, wandering character who becomes Connor’s mentor. The trailer also shows glimpses of the rest of the cast, both in scenes from the movie and some fun behind-the-scenes footage.
The movie Highlander follows Connor MacLeod, a Scottish warrior from the 1500s, who discovers he can’t die and is fated to battle other immortals.
The Highlander Franchise Has Been Around for Decades
Chad Stahelski recently directed Highlander, working from a screenplay by Kerry Williamson and Mike Finch. However, this isn’t the first Highlander movie – the story began in 1986 with Christopher Lambert in the lead role.
The movie Highlander spawned several follow-ups, including four sequels, two TV series, an animated show, and even an anime film. Despite never achieving mainstream success, the franchise gained a dedicated cult following.
A reboot of Highlander has been in development for more than ten years. Summit Entertainment first considered a remake back in 2008, with several directors potentially involved, including Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Chad Stahelski came on board in 2016, and Henry Cavill was cast in 2021. Dave Bautista had been connected to the project since 2015.
In addition to the two main actors and Russell Crowe, the film Highlander features Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Drew McIntyre, Jeremy Irons, Max Zhang, and others.
Highlander doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected to premiere sometime next year.
