William Shatner is frustrated by ongoing rumors and decided to address them. He posted a passionate message on social media, referencing a famous sketch he did on Saturday Night Live to make his point.
William Shatner recently addressed online rumors about a supposed secret meeting with Paramount/CBS executives regarding Star Trek. In a post on Instagram, the 95-year-old actor firmly denied the meeting ever happened, saying he was upset that fans believed the reports. He also jokingly told those sharing videos about the rumors to “get a life,” a reference to a Saturday Night Live sketch he once did about Star Trek fans.
William Shatner Says Don’t Believe the Hype
To everyone following rumors online about a secret meeting I had with Paramount/CBS regarding Star Trek or Starfleet Academy: please remember advice I gave on SNL years ago – get a life! This meeting never happened, as far as I know. The truth is, there’s a growing number of fake stories created by AI to get attention and make money, and it’s frustrating to see so many people believing them.
He added that what bothered him wasn’t the silly rumors themselves, but how quickly people believed them and the anger they caused within a community originally founded on positive things. He simply advised that if you’re not enjoying something, you should just stop watching it and focus on things you do like – that’s always the best approach.
A famous 1986 sketch from Saturday Night Live features William Shatner playing himself at a Star Trek fan convention. He answers questions from fans, but they become increasingly silly and unimportant, eventually causing him to lose his patience and tell them to “Get a life!” Just as he’s about to leave, his manager points out that these same fans are the reason for his success, so he reluctantly returns and resumes being polite.
William Shatner Fires Back at Online Rumors
Okay, so there was this crazy rumor going around that William Shatner – and maybe some other classic Star Trek stars – actually went to Paramount and gave them a piece of their mind about where they were taking the franchise. Apparently, Shatner was especially upset that some of the new stuff didn’t feel true to what Gene Roddenberry, the original creator, had envisioned for Star Trek. It was weird because this was happening even after Shatner had been pretty positive publicly about Starfleet Academy following the cancellation on Paramount+.
Shatner expressed his hope that the Star Trek series continues. He shared on social media that he was saddened to hear about its potential end, recalling a time when a kiss on the original series caused controversy and was pulled from broadcast by some stations in the South. He pointed out that this act would likely be labeled as ‘woke DEI’ or going against societal ‘norms’ today, and lamented that not much progress seems to have been made since then.
William Shatner also spoke out against false reports about his health. Recently, AI-created images circulated online showing him in a hospital bed, falsely claiming he had cancer. Shatner urged his fans to only believe information that comes directly from him.
He insisted the ones making up these crazy stories were sick, not him. He kept saying he was perfectly healthy and that I shouldn’t worry about a thing.
