New Lord of the Rings movie confirms Jamie Dornan in major recast of iconic role

A new Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, is shaking things up with a significant casting change. Jamie Dornan, known for his role in The Tourist, will now play Strider, a character who later becomes Aragorn in the original story.

Following its debut at CinemaCon, an official Instagram post revealed additional cast members for the new film directed by Andy Serkis. Serkis will again voice Gollum/Smeagol, and Ian McKellen, Lee Pace, and Elijah Wood are all returning as Gandalf, Thranduil, and Frodo, respectively.

Joining the cast of the Lord of the Rings series are both Jamie Dornan and Kate Winslet. Winslet was previously confirmed for The Hunt for Gollum, and she had earlier declined a role in the original Lord of the Rings films.

Kate Winslet’s character in the upcoming prequel has been revealed: she’ll be playing Marigol. Leo Woodall, known from The White Lotus, will also appear as Halvard.

Earlier this month, Andy Serkis talked about the decision to recast the role of Aragorn, explaining that a different actor will now play the part originally made famous by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s films.

Serkis acknowledged there’s a lot of discussion about the future of the role, but confirmed they’re currently in the process of finding a new actor to take it on, as he told ScreenRant.

In The Hunt for Gollum, Strider—also known as Aragorn—plays a key role as he tries to capture Gollum. He’s attempting to do this before Gollum can tell Sauron where the One Ring is hidden, as Aragorn is destined to become King of Gondor.

Although specific plot details haven’t been revealed yet, director Andy Serkis has shared that the new film will stay true to the established world and spirit of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He also mentioned that many of the original filmmakers are involved, ensuring it will feel like a genuine Middle-earth adventure.

Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens—the screenwriters behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogy—teamed up with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou to write The Hunt for Gollum. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson also produced the film.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released on 17 December 2027.
