This review investigates the design of a human-centred generative AI system to strengthen socially shared regulation in computer-supported collaborative learning.
Effective collaborative learning hinges on groupsā ability to self-regulate, yet the impact of generative AI (GenAI) on these socially distributed regulatory processes remains largely unknown. This doctoral project, ‘Building Regulation Capacity in Human-AI Collaborative Learning: A Human-Centred GenAI System’, proposes and investigates a GenAI-supported system designed to strengthen co-regulation and socially shared regulation within collaborative learning environments. Preliminary findings suggest that targeted interventions-combining activity generation, in-group support, and learning analytics-can reshape regulation patterns and improve group performance. How can we best leverage GenAI to not only support but enhance the complex dynamics of human collaboration and learning?

Initially, collaborative activities are designed and implemented. During activity execution, an In-Group Support Agent, powered by Generative AI, provides real-time assistance to student groups. Subsequently, data collected through Learning Analytics monitors group dynamics and individual contributions, identifying areas for improvement in both activity design and the responsiveness of the In-Group Support Agent; this analysis then informs the redesign of subsequent group activities, completing the cycle and enabling continuous refinement of the learning experience.
The In-Group Support Agent utilizes Generative AI to deliver real-time assistance during collaborative tasks. This agent functions by analyzing group interactions and providing dynamically generated prompts and scaffolding designed to address specific challenges encountered by the learners. Support mechanisms include suggestions for task decomposition, clarification of ambiguous instructions, and prompts encouraging peer explanation and constructive feedback. The agentās interventions are not intended to provide direct answers, but rather to stimulate productive discussion and facilitate self-directed problem-solving within the group, ultimately promoting co-regulation and improved learning outcomes.
Proactive support within collaborative learning environments, facilitated by tools like AI-powered agents, is designed to cultivate both co-regulation and socially shared regulation. Co-regulation refers to an individualās ability to monitor and adjust their own learning processes, while socially shared regulation involves the collaborative management of learning among group members. Specifically, this support provides timely prompts and scaffolding intended to encourage learners to articulate their understanding, monitor their progress toward shared goals, and provide constructive feedback to peers. By externalizing these regulatory processes initially, the system aims to gradually internalize them within the group, leading to increased self-direction and improved collective learning outcomes.
Focus on the Process: Why āWhatā Matters Less Than āHowā
The In-Group Support Agent employs Process-Focused Prompts as a mechanism to stimulate specific cognitive processes within a collaborative setting. These prompts are intentionally designed to elicit explanation – requiring individuals to verbalize their reasoning – and perspective-taking, prompting consideration of viewpoints beyond their own. Furthermore, the prompts encourage monitoring, where group members reflect on their collective progress and identify areas requiring further attention. This approach distinguishes the agentās interventions from content-specific guidance, instead prioritizing the regulation of the collaborative reasoning process itself.
Process-focused prompts within the In-Group Support Agent are deliberately designed to be independent of the specific task or subject matter. This means the prompts do not ask for factual information or solutions directly related to the problem being addressed. Instead, they target the how of thinking, rather than the what. Examples include requests for justification of reasoning, consideration of alternative perspectives, or monitoring of group progress. By concentrating on the cognitive processes underpinning problem-solving – such as explanation, evaluation, and reflection – these prompts aim to improve collaborative reasoning skills applicable across diverse content areas and tasks, promoting transferability of learning.
The In-Group Support Agentās design directly supports deeper learning and collaborative knowledge building by prompting learners to externalize their cognitive processes. This is achieved by eliciting explanations of reasoning, justifications for choices, and reflections on individual and group progress. By making thinking visible, the agent enables group members to examine, critique, and build upon each otherās contributions. This process of articulation and externalization moves beyond surface-level understanding, encouraging the construction of more robust and shared mental models of the problem space, and ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes through socially shared cognition.
Network analysis provides a methodology for quantifying the impact of Process-Focused Prompts on group dynamics. By representing group members as nodes and interactions (e.g., responses to prompts, replies to peers) as edges, researchers can map communication patterns and identify key influencers. Metrics such as node degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and clustering coefficient can then be calculated to determine how prompts affect the distribution of communicative power and the formation of cohesive subgroups. Furthermore, analysis of temporal network data allows for the observation of how socially shared regulation – the degree to which group members mutually monitor and guide each otherās understanding – emerges and evolves in response to the prompts, potentially revealing shifts in collaborative problem-solving strategies and the overall efficiency of knowledge construction.

The systemās capacity for adaptive intervention represents a significant shift in facilitating collaborative learning. By continuously monitoring group interactions, the AI doesn’t simply offer blanket assistance, but instead dynamically adjusts the type and timing of support provided. When the analysis identifies a stalled discussion, for instance, the AI can deploy a targeted prompt designed to re-focus the conversation, or offer scaffolding – providing a structured approach to problem-solving. This granular level of support ensures that interventions are relevant to the specific challenges each group faces, fostering more productive collaboration and preventing minor difficulties from escalating into major roadblocks. The ultimate goal is to create a learning environment where support is seamlessly integrated into the process, enabling students to navigate complex tasks with increased confidence and efficiency.

Crucially, these cognitive functions are interwoven with affective processes – the groupās shared emotional climate and interpersonal dynamics. Research suggests that successful collaborative regulation isnāt simply about efficient task completion, but rather a nuanced interplay where groups skillfully balance planning, problem-solving, and emotional support. Further investigation into these interconnected processes promises to reveal strategies for fostering more resilient, adaptive, and ultimately, higher-performing collaborative teams.
Recent research indicates that the introduction of a generative AI agent into collaborative learning environments fundamentally alters how groups self-regulate, moving away from strictly human-driven or AI-driven processes towards a blended, hybrid form of co-regulation. This system, striving for socially shared regulation, will undoubtedly discover that production environments have a habit of revealing unforeseen flaws in even the most thoughtfully constructed frameworks. Itās not a criticism, merely a predictable stage in the lifecycle of any ambitious project.
What’s Next?
The pursuit of augmenting collaborative learning with generative AI inevitably encounters the limitations of current regulation models. This work highlights the ambition to distribute regulatory load – a sound strategy, yet one that quickly reveals the brittleness of āsocially shared regulationā when scaled beyond carefully curated research conditions. Every optimization for shared cognitive load will, in time, be optimized back by the emergence of unforeseen dependencies and novel failure modes in the human-AI loop. The system, as demonstrated, can support co-regulation; it does not, however, become it.
Future iterations will likely focus on the predictable problem of drift. The very algorithms designed to anticipate regulatory needs will themselves require constant recalibration as learning contexts evolve and participants adapt. The true challenge isn’t building a system that enforces regulation, but one that gracefully degrades when regulation inevitably fails. Architecture isnāt a diagram; itās a compromise that survived deployment – and the survival window is always shorter than anticipated.
The field should brace for a shift in metrics. Measuring āimproved learning outcomesā feels increasingly insufficient. Instead, the focus will likely turn to quantifying the cost of regulation – not just in terms of computational resources, but in cognitive burden and the subtle erosion of autonomy. The code doesn’t get refactored; it gets resuscitated, again and again.
