Original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Designer Says Bethesda’s Remaster Is So Impressive It Could Be Called ‘Oblivion 2.0’

According to the lead game designer of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Bruce Nesmith, the remastered version developed by Bethesda and Virtuos, titled Oblivion Remastered, is so remarkable that he doubts if the term “remaster” truly captures its greatness.

The creator who contributed significantly to what made the original 2006 RPG unique expressed his thoughts about the recently announced and released remaster of Oblivion during a recent chat with VideoGamer. He spoke about the hard work, dedication, and effort put into making each part of Cyrodiil feel alive, which is why it’s surprising to see Oblivion reimagined in almost every aspect.

Nesmith expressed his surprise, stating, “I thought we were just getting a texture upgrade. I didn’t anticipate it would be a full-scale overhaul as they’ve announced… A simple texture update wouldn’t have caught me off guard. But to revamp the animations, animation system, migrate to Unreal Engine, alter the leveling system, modify the user interface… That’s a comprehensive change that affects every aspect of the game.

Bethesda didn’t announce Oblivion Remastered prior to its release yesterday. However, long-term fans have been largely impressed by the numerous updates that span from minor visual enhancements to significant gameplay modifications. The incorporation of a new sprint feature and alterations to the leveling system have led many to believe that Oblivion Remastered is not just a remaster but rather a reimagining, with Nesmith leaning towards the same perspective.

The closest that could come [to categorising it] is Oblivion 2.0.

He remarked, “That level of refinement is truly immense! It’s nearly deserving of its own term. Frankly, ‘remastering’ doesn’t seem sufficient to convey the extent of it.

In another part of the conversation, he tried to classify his experience with Oblivion Remastered thus far by saying, “It’s most like a version 2.0 of Oblivion.”

As fans admire the effort behind Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has shared their thought process behind naming this RPG remake. In a post on social media yesterday, they revealed that they didn’t aim to recreate Oblivion, but rather enhance the familiar experience while updating it for new players, keeping both its strengths and flaws intact.

Bethesda expressed that many long-time fans will undoubtedly enjoy revisiting Oblivion and the realm of Cyrodiil. However, there are also numerous individuals who have yet to experience it. They express their heartfelt gratitude for the continuous support received over the years. With this remastered version, they aim that regardless of your gaming history, stepping out of the Imperial sewer will feel like a brand-new adventure for everyone.
