Star Wars Maul – Shadow Lord Changes Iconic Lightsaber Design

Okay, huge warning: if you haven’t seen episode 4 of Maul – Shadow Lord, spoilers ahead! As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I was really surprised to see them actually change one of the most recognizable lightsabers in the entire saga through this series. Lightsabers have always been central to Star Wars, going all the way back to 1977, and it’s been fun to see them play with the idea of different blades ever since Luke switched to green in Return of the Jedi. But this feels different – they’ve really added to the lore by changing an existing, iconic weapon, and it’s something we’ve seen more and more of over the years.

The most memorable lightsabers in Star Wars often stand out because they break from tradition. Think about Darth Maul’s unique double-bladed lightsaber in The Phantom Menace, Mace Windu’s purple blade, Kylo Ren’s crossguard design, or even the unusual hinged, double-bladed lightsaber wielded by Dark Rey—and later, her yellow one—in The Rise of Skywalker. Introducing new lightsaber variations almost always creates exciting moments in the Star Wars universe.

Generally, Star Wars focuses on introducing new lightsabers rather than changing existing ones. While some Jedi, like Ezra Bridger and Cal Kestis, have altered their lightsabers over time, iconic weapons usually remain the same or are destroyed – think of all the lightsabers Anakin Skywalker lost. It’s unusual to see a significant modification to an established, famous lightsaber in the Star Wars universe.

Darth Maul, the Shadow Lord, has recently updated the look of his iconic weapon. Though it’s been 27 years since he first wielded his double-bladed lightsaber in The Phantom Menace, the animated series now features a slightly altered design. The core look – the double, red blades – remains the same, but it’s a noticeable change.

Maul – Shadow Lord Made Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber Into A Split Saber

Okay, so as a huge Star Wars fan, I was totally blown away by the latest episode of Maul – Shadow Lord. It turns out Maul’s signature double-bladed lightsaber isn’t what it used to be! Remember how in The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars it was one solid hilt with crystals powering blades from both ends? Well, now he’s modified it. It can actually split in half, giving him two separate, single-bladed lightsabers. It’s a pretty cool upgrade, and a really interesting twist on his iconic weapon!

According to Shadow Lord, Darth Maul switched lightsabers between episodes 3 and 4. Devon Izara briefly wielded one half of Maul’s separated lightsaber, and he later reconnected the two halves to form his signature double-bladed weapon during his fight with the Pyke Syndicate at the beginning of episode 4.

We don’t know exactly when Maul altered his lightsaber, but it happened between the events of The Clone Wars and Shadow Lord. This change – allowing him to split his lightsaber into two – would have given him a significant advantage in fights, particularly against Jedi familiar with his fighting style. Since he hadn’t used this design before, it’s clear this modification is new in Maul – Shadow Lord.

The split saber design has appeared in Star Wars before. It first showed up in the 2008 film The Clone Wars, used by the character Asajj Ventress. However, it’s become much more well-known thanks to Cal Kestis in the games Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. The character known as the Stranger in The Acolyte also uses a similar design, but their saber blades don’t connect to form a traditional double-bladed weapon.

Maul’s Lightsaber Could Change Even More By The End Of Shadow Lord

Darth Maul’s new split lightsaber is a significant change for the character, and it might not be the only one. Throughout his life, Maul has wielded two different lightsabers. The first was the iconic double-bladed saber from The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars. The one he currently uses in Maul – Shadow Lord appears to be that same original saber, simply altered to split into two.

Maul used a second lightsaber that appeared in the series Star Wars Rebels. After losing his original weapon, he began wielding a modified version of the Inquisitor lightsaber. This new saber retained a small portion of the Inquisitor’s unique circular hand guard, but without the spinning ability. The switch from his first lightsaber to this modified version happened sometime between the Maul – Shadow Lord comic and the events of Rebels.

Knowing that Maul eventually changes his lightsaber, it’s likely we’ll see this happen in Maul – Shadow Lord. The series sets up a good reason for the switch. Trailers suggest Maul will fight Marrok, an Imperial Inquisitor under Darth Vader. During this fight, Maul’s original lightsaber could be broken, and if he wins, he might take Marrok’s lightsaber as a replacement – which makes sense, since Marrok is already known to be dead by the time of Ahsoka.

Providing Maul with a new lightsaber would align perfectly with the themes of Maul – Shadow Lord. The series focuses on reimagining Maul’s character, and it’s already shown him to be more complex and thoughtful than previously thought, even displaying empathy towards the Jedi. A new lightsaber would represent this significant character development within Maul – Shadow Lord.
