First look at Barry Keoghan in “long-awaited” new drama as it gets exciting update

The first images of Barry Keoghan in Butterfly Jam have been revealed. This film marks the English-language debut of acclaimed Russian director Kantemir Balagov. It will premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 13 as part of the Directors’ Fortnight selection, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

I’m really excited about this new movie, Butterfly Jam! The cast is awesome – you’ve got Barry Keoghan, plus Riley Keough, Harry Melling (you might recognize him from Harry Potter!), Monica Bellucci, and a new actor named Talha Akdogan. It’s shaping up to be something special!

The first image released from the movie features Barry Keoghan and Sydney Sweeney together, but details about who they play are currently being kept secret.

The movie takes place within the Circassian community in New Jersey and tells the story of a teenager whose parents and aunt own a diner that’s known for its traditional Circassian food. The diner is facing financial difficulties.

According to Deadline, when the boy isn’t working at the restaurant, he’s training to be a professional wrestler.

Okay, so this story really grabbed me because it’s about a guy whose dad makes a huge mistake. Suddenly, he’s not just dealing with the fallout, but he’s also forced to face some really tough, violent stuff. It’s like his innocence is ripped away, and he has to grow up way too quickly because of everything that happens. It’s a tough journey for him, seeing his dad’s flaws and having to cope with the consequences.

Barry Keoghan is currently working on a project directed by Sam Mendes about The Beatles. The project will be a series of four films, with each film focusing on the life of a different member of the band.

The actor will portray Ringo Starr in a film featuring Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

Earlier this year, Keoghan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and spoke about meeting Starr at his home.

Keoghan shared that he visited Ringo Starr at his home, where Ringo played the drums. Ringo invited Keoghan to play as well, but Keoghan clarified he wasn’t drumming with Ringo.

I avoided eye contact with him because I was really nervous—just as I am now. He noticed and told me it was okay to look at him.

The Irish actor most recently played Duke Shelby, the oldest son of Cillian Murphy’s character Tommy, in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Butterfly Jam is yet to get a UK release date.
