Will there be more Hacks after season 5 finale? Bosses respond to reboot question

The highly acclaimed HBO comedy Hacks is starting its fifth and final season this month, with new episodes arriving in the UK next week. Although viewers will be sad to say goodbye to the show, there’s a possibility it could be revived in the future.

Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, the creators of the show, recently spoke with Variety about whether the story has reached its conclusion. While they didn’t confirm anything definitively, they hinted that the show might return sometime in the future.

Look, we’re not ruling anything out, honestly. We absolutely adore these characters and the world they live in, and we love working with the whole cast. Right now, though, it feels like the perfect time to wrap things up – we want to leave while people still enjoy it. But don’t think that means we’d never consider doing something more in the future – you might not even need to ask!

The creators of the show also revealed they’re working on another project for HBO, but they haven’t shared any specifics yet.

The show Hacks centers on the complicated but ultimately loving connection between veteran comedian Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart) and her new writer, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Even though Deborah has had a long and successful career, she’s finding it hard to stay popular with today’s audiences.

I’ve never seen a relationship quite like Ava and Deborah’s portrayed on screen before,” Smart explained. “The writers consistently surprise me and improve with each season, and this one might be the best yet.”

The show started in 2021, when Einbinder was just 24. She says being on the series felt like a major period of personal growth. ‘It really felt like I came into my own,’ she explained, comparing the experience to going through a complete ‘Saturn return’ – and then some.

Einbinder described the growing connection between Deborah and Ava over the past five years, saying it’s been enjoyable and that they have a good dynamic, both when they’re playfully challenging each other and when they’re working together.

The actor said she’d definitely be interested in participating in a reboot. She jokingly added that she’d jump at the chance to work with her former castmates again, calling them ‘her people’.

Hacks season 5 premieres on 17 April on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
