Mike Flanagan’s connection to the horror genre started with his upbringing in Salem, Massachusetts. He’s since become known for creating critically acclaimed horror stories like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, which are as popular, if not more so, than his adaptations of Stephen King’s work. Now, Flanagan is tackling King’s most iconic novel, Carrie, as a miniseries for Prime Video, and the first preview suggests it will be powerfully emotional and frightening.
Although a new adaptation of Carrie isn’t due out until October 2026, many other shows already explore the darker aspects of being a teenager, especially when supernatural abilities suddenly appear. These shows, like Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie, avoid the typical, lighthearted portrayal of high school and instead focus on more challenging, frightening, and exciting experiences.
Many people remember Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a bright and quirky comic. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa reimagines it as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a darker, more gothic tale. The story follows Sabrina Spellman, who lives with her aunts in the town of Greendale. Sabrina faces a crisis of identity when she discovers she’s not only a witch, but the daughter of the Devil.
In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Sabrina makes a pact with dark forces and enrolls in the Academy of the Unseen Arts, where she battles supernatural threats and demonic powers that endanger humanity. This version of Sabrina is a darker, more mature take on the original comics, embracing occult themes and not shying away from horror and gore—including sacrifices, terrifying creatures, and glimpses of hell. It’s a captivating and intense teen drama.
Similar to the story of Carrie, Wednesday centers around a strong female lead. However, Wednesday Addams doesn’t passively accept mistreatment like Carrie did at first. She’s sharp, blunt, and has a dark sense of humor. The series begins with Wednesday arriving at Nevermore Academy, a school for magical outcasts, after a conflict at her regular school involving piranhas. In this world, people with magical abilities are known as Outcasts, and they share a fragile peace with the human residents of Jericho.
Wednesday shares a psychic ability with her mother, Morticia, and uses it to unravel mysteries at her school. The show, with its thrilling atmosphere, love for the macabre, and Tim Burton’s signature style, makes Wednesday an enjoyable watch for both teens and adults.
Released in 2020, I Am Not Okay With This centers on Sydney Novak, a 17-year-old dealing with her father’s recent suicide, struggles at school, and complicated feelings for her best friend, Dina. As she navigates the ups and downs of being a teenager, Sydney unexpectedly discovers she has telekinetic powers. But when she can’t control these powers – causing things like entire libraries to collapse – she realizes something even bigger is coming.
This dark teen drama takes place in the same world as The End of the Fing World, but it’s surprisingly colorful and lively—at least, until the homecoming dance. Things quickly turn chaotic with blood, gore, and a student gone wild, creating a finale that strongly resembles the movie Carrie. The season also ends with a major plot twist that leads into the next season.
Elena Gilbert’s life is turned upside down when her parents tragically die in a car accident. While struggling with her loss, she finds a connection with Stefan Salvatore, a new student at her high school. Their budding romance takes a dramatic turn when Elena discovers Stefan is actually a nearly 200-year-old vampire.
Elena’s life is incredibly complicated. She comes from a family of magical doubles, which makes her a target for all sorts of supernatural creatures – werewolves, vampire-werewolf hybrids, witches, and even Sirens. To make things even more difficult, she starts to fall for Damon Salvatore, the charming but unpredictable brother of Stefan. The Vampire Diaries is a popular, fast-moving show that expertly blends the drama of being a teenager with romance and exciting fantasy elements.
This story blends horror with heartfelt emotion, focusing on eight young people with terminal illnesses who live at a hospice. Every night, they gather to share and experience terrifying stories that mysteriously become real before their eyes.
This show features spooky stories and attempts to connect with the supernatural. It blends sudden scares with deeper psychological horror, making it a great choice for teen fans of the genre. Although The Midnight Club was originally planned for two seasons, it was canceled after only one. Despite this, the series is a short, engaging story that is both frightening and emotionally moving.
