Mark Hamill breaks silence on major Star Wars shake-up following surprise exit

Mark Hamill, famous for his role in Star Wars, has spoken about the changes happening within the franchise after Kathleen Kennedy stepped down. Kennedy, who led Lucasfilm for 14 years, announced her departure in January.

As a huge fan, I was so impressed with everything Kathleen Kennedy accomplished while she was in charge – she oversaw some amazing projects like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Mandalorian. It’s really worrying to hear she’s stepping down though, because now I’m not sure what’s going to happen with all the Star Wars stuff that was still in the works.

After Kennedy stepped down, Lucasfilm promoted Dave Filoni to president, where he will work alongside Co-President Lynwen Brennan. Mark Hamill told USA Today he believes Star Wars is in excellent hands with Filoni leading the way.

The actor is famous for his role as Luke Skywalker in the popular Star Wars series. He’s also lent his voice to other characters in the Star Wars universe, including Darth Bane in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Hamill explained that Filoni has a deep understanding of the Star Wars universe, having worked alongside its creator, George Lucas, on the 2008 animated series. According to Hamill, Lucas mentored Filoni, giving him a strong sense of Lucas’s creative vision.

Mark Hamill reprised his role as a young Luke Skywalker in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, both shows overseen by Dave Filoni. Hamill has praised Filoni’s work, calling it excellent.

During the interview, Hamill also fondly remembered balancing parenthood with his work on the popular sci-fi series. He shared a story about bringing his oldest son, Nathan, to the set of the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, and how much his son enjoyed it.

He was small enough to fit comfortably in Yoda’s home and everything was just the right size for him. He even got to sit on the Emperor’s throne! While visiting the workshop where they created creatures and props, the staff happily let him explore and play with the items.

I felt the same way when I worked on The Muppet Show. I thought, ‘What a great opportunity for him,’ and honestly, I was a little jealous that he was getting to experience so much.

The actor shared that his son, Griffin, is very thoughtful and tends to be serious. Griffin told him, ‘I don’t really enjoy Star Wars movies – I think they’re too focused on making money.’ He added that his daughter is a fan, and that all children have different tastes.

You can now watch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and all nine films in the Skywalker Saga on Disney+. They’re also available for purchase on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD.
