So, guess what? The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) decided to take on Arizona this week, trying to block the state’s attempt to apply gambling laws to prediction markets. Sounds like an exciting plot for a Netflix thriller, right?
But wait, this isn’t just about Arizona-it’s a full-blown drama! The CFTC is suing not one, but THREE states-Arizona, Connecticut, and Illinois-for the first time in its 50-year history. Talk about stirring the pot!
The Federal Power Play (With a Side of Family Drama)
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig isn’t just throwing a tantrum. He’s framing the injunction request as a bold defense of federal authority. In his world, states don’t get to mess with federal law. Can you hear the dramatic music in the background?
“The agency won’t stand for intimidation by states seeking to nullify federal law,” said Selig. Translation: “We’ve got bigger muscles, and we’re not afraid to use them.”
And the plot thickens in Arizona, where the state is using criminal and gambling laws to mess with companies that are happily following the federal regime. Arizona has accused Kalshi of illegal gambling-classic state move, right? We all know the feds love a good battle of jurisdiction.

But here’s where things get REALLY juicy. It turns out the platforms the CFTC is defending have some serious connections to-surprise-Donald Trump Jr. (because, of course, we’re all connected in this little game). Trump Jr. is a paid advisor for Kalshi and has a comfy spot on Polymarket’s advisory board. His firm, 1789 Capital, dropped millions into Polymarket last August. Wouldn’t you love to see the bank account for that?
Crypto.com, Robinhood, and That Awkward Conflict of Interest
Hold on, it gets even more tangled. Trump’s media empire, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), has teamed up with Crypto.com to launch Truth Predict-a prediction market platform for none other than Truth Social. Yes, the very platform that’s been living its best life in the social media wilderness.
Crypto.com isn’t shy either. It’s donated at least $35 million to MAGA Inc., Trump’s favorite Super PAC. We can almost hear the “cha-ching” from here.
Oh, and did I mention Robinhood? They’re in on the action too, agreeing to serve as the brokerage and trustee for Trump Accounts. All these companies? They’ve all received cease-and-desist letters from the states the CFTC is suing. It’s like a family reunion, but with lawyers.
Georgia State University professor Todd Phillips told NPR that these federal suits are not just about protecting markets-they’re more like a heavy-handed attempt to stack the deck in favor of prediction platforms. Shocking, right?
“We’re deeply concerned by this suit for a number of reasons-namely, that Donald Trump Jr. advises both Kalshi & Polymarket. He stands to profit off of these platforms’ success.”

Of course, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong is having none of it. He’s firing back, calling prediction markets “plainly unlicensed illegal gambling” and promising to defend state consumer protection laws like a knight in shining armor. Someone’s got to play the villain, right?
The Ninth Circuit will hear oral arguments on April 16 in a consolidated case involving Kalshi, Robinhood, and Crypto.com. Will this ruling set the tone for how prediction markets are regulated? Who knows, but let’s be real-it’s a game-changer.
