Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: First Impressions!
Back in 2018, Warhorse Studios unveiled the expansive role-playing game, Kingdom Come Deliverance. Although it started off a bit rocky, I found myself captivated by this title. As updates and additional content rolled out, the gaming experience only grew better, and to the present day, Kingdom Come Deliverance remains high on my list of favorite RPGs. Excitingly, we now have the sequel, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, which vows to build upon the original’s merits and offer an even more captivating journey!
In this story, the world creation was well-executed without being excessively detailed, and I found myself deeply appreciating Henry. He’s a robust blacksmith’s son who enjoys ale and brawls, drawn into the escalating conflict in Eastern Europe out of a desire for revenge. Despite its flaws, 2018’s Kingdom Come Deliverance was outstanding.
In contrast to a typical sequel, Warhorse Studios has shown thoughtfulness in making Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 accessible for new players. You won’t feel lost or overpowered if you haven’t played the original game’s 50-hour campaign. The opening act effectively carries forward from where the first game concluded. Despite the lengthy development periods required for such intricate games, my doubts about the series have been unfounded thus far.
In the sequel of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Bohemia finds itself engulfed in a fierce war orchestrated by Sigismund. Our beloved medieval companions, Henry and Hans Capon, undertake a diplomatic venture to rally allies for the impending battle against Sigismund. However, their diplomatic party is ambushed by robbers, placing both Henry and Hans Capon at risk of death. A lively tavern brawl ensues, but Hans ultimately decides to depart on his own. As Henry, we embark on our journey from this point forward.
In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, the introduction serves as a dual guide for both the storyline and game mechanics, significantly enhancing the experience compared to its predecessor. It’s designed in such a way that it feels organic, allowing the game to demonstrate character development and engaging gameplay without causing frustration. The clever approach of referencing the earlier game without overwhelming players with excessive information is appreciated by many.
In the beginning, playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 was quite frustrating for me due to the challenging combat system. However, the sequel seems to introduce its mechanics more smoothly. It’s crucial to note this because Kingdom Come Deliverance is one of the most intricate RPGs out there, with numerous interconnected components.
The first Kingdom Come Deliverance game was tough for me to get into due to combat issues, but the sequel seems easier to grasp. This matters since Kingdom Come Deliverance is a complex RPG with many working parts.
In the realm of beauty, both the world and immersion hold a special charm. Though the initial game established a commendable visual benchmark, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 takes it a step further. The intriguing non-linear gameplay and multifarious survival elements make exploration an enticing and rewarding experience, offering a visually stunning feast for the eyes. The forests remain as breathtaking as ever, and with two expansive regions to traverse, the main quest unfolds. Warhorse Studios has consistently demonstrated their eye for detail, even in the game’s menus. Moreover, the game is rich in lore about its locations, history, and medieval lifestyle. For those who appreciate in-game codexes like myself, this one ranks among the best. I wholeheartedly recommend delving into these historical accounts as you progress through your adventure.
Although I initially find the game quite appealing, there are some aspects worth mentioning. The restrictive saving system in Kingdom Come Deliverance: Sequel stands out as a potential issue. This problem was present in the original game and has returned in the sequel. Initially, saves are limited, though you can save upon exiting if required. However, I’m not convinced about the necessity of the item needed for Saviour Schnapps to be saved in such a restricted manner. While I comprehend its design, I believe that single-player games should grant players more control over their saving process. There are several ways to save: securing beds at inns or crucial locations is relatively straightforward, and there are saves during quest milestones. Nonetheless, the principle of limited saving remains a concern for many gamers.
2018 saw a rocky debut for the original version, marked by numerous technical issues such as frequent crashes and glitches galore. Thankfully, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 seems to have ironed out many of these kinks! However, keep in mind that even with its improved state, it’s still a game of this scale and intricacy, so there may still be some hiccups here and there.
I encountered issues with the save system when I was killed early, as it sometimes sent me back to an earlier point than anticipated. Securing the initial safe house can also take some time, especially if you’re new to the game. Be mindful of potential crashes or challenges in mastering the combat system.
While I find the limited saving design less irritating compared to others, I would appreciate it more if it weren’t part of the game.
To wrap things up, let’s discuss the game’s performance for a moment. Kingdom Come Deliverance II packs quite a punch, but you need not worry about its performance. On my RTX 3060 laptop, I was able to maintain a consistent 60FPS even with high settings, which suggests that your experience should be smooth. Given that my setup is mid-range at best, this is a good sign of what you can expect. Additionally, it runs reasonably well on the Steam Deck, as demonstrated by my colleagues at SteamDeckHQ. This enhanced performance gives us confidence in the game’s technical capabilities.
Amidst work obligations and periods of illness, I find myself lagging behind where I’d prefer to be with this game, yet I wanted to share my initial thoughts. The game is captivating, making it hard not to lose track of time, almost as if the story is tapping its foot in impatience while glancing at a watch. Apologies, narrative, but the allure of the stunning open world keeps pulling me away! As of now, I haven’t delved into crime sprees like in the previous game, which should help me better understand the mechanics of crime and lockpicking. Look forward to a more detailed review from me later on, as things are promising at present.
