Key Highlights
- Drift Protocol, in a desperate attempt to fix things, is joining forces with Asymmetric Research and OtterSec to plot a recovery strategy.
- The team also has plans to participate in the oh-so-reliable STRIDE program by the Solana Foundation. Let’s hope it helps!
- The STRIDE initiative, brought to life by Asymmetric Research, will focus on security evaluations. Because, why not?
Drift Protocol, ever the resilient warrior in the face of calamity, announced it is collaborating with Asymmetric Research, a security boutique for the rich and famous, and OtterSec, a security audit firm that specializes in preventing disasters like this, to map out a recovery plan. The move comes after the protocol’s abrupt encounter with an exploit on April 1, which drained a staggering $285 million in user funds. How’s that for a “fool’s day” surprise?
In a statement that was shared across the mysterious world of X on Tuesday, the Drift team made it clear: their number one priority is “stabilizing the situation”-a noble effort, indeed. Not to mention delivering some semblance of protocol-level assurances to the users and partners who have been left reeling from this lovely exploit.
Drift is actively working with @asymmetric_re, and @osec_io to consolidate a coordinated recovery plan.
Our immediate focus is to stabilize the situation and provide protocol-level assurance to all affected users and partners.
Drift will also be participating in the STRIDE…

What Did the Protocol Update? Let’s See
The protocol’s new efforts seem to be aimed at containing the damage while keeping the community in the loop. After the attack, deposits and withdrawals were immediately suspended. Because, of course, that was the first step-who needs money movement when everything is on fire?
Drift also announced that it will be stepping into the newly minted STRIDE program, which was started by the Solana Foundation. This program, created in collaboration with Asymmetric Research, is designed to offer security evaluations and ongoing threat monitoring for DeFi protocols on Solana. You know, just in case something goes wrong again. The protocol added that it’s aligning with top-tier ecosystem security teams to ensure they don’t mess up a second time.
The Exploit: The Plot Thickens
The incident took place on April 1 and is already being called one of the largest DeFi attacks of the year. In a mere 10-12 minutes, hackers walked away with around $285-$286 million. Reports suggest the attack was sophisticated, involving social engineering and exploiting durable nonces on Solana-because apparently, just hacking the system wasn’t enough. And, to top it off, the attackers managed to infiltrate the protocol’s security council. Truly a “masterstroke” of mischief.
Some blockchain analytics firms, including Elliptic, have made the bold claim that North Korean actors might be behind the whole thing. Meanwhile, Drift’s total value locked (TVL) plummeted in the aftermath, making it clear that swift action was needed from the protocol and the wider ecosystem.
The Community Assurance: Who Needs to Sleep at Night?
Drift, ever the optimist, assured its users that updates on the recovery process will be delivered, because who wouldn’t want to stay tuned for more drama? They also hinted at potential compensation mechanisms and security improvements-but hey, we’ll see what actually comes out of it.
By teaming up with firms like Asymmetric Research and getting involved with the Solana Foundation’s STRIDE program, Drift is showing a maturing approach to DeFi disasters. If anything, they’re giving it their best shot at rebuilding trust. Let’s hope this time the protocol is a little more resilient than last time.
