Is Wendy Williams Trapped in a ConservatorshipLike Britney Spears? Public Outcry Grows as FansDemand #FreeWendy Movement
Fans of Wendy Williams have strongly criticized her legal representative, Sabrina Morrissey, following the celebrity’s surprising disclosure about her conservatorship and her feelings that it’s like being in a prison.
On Thursday, the television figure, aged 60 and dealing with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, reached out to The Breakfast Club to share his experiences of enduring ’emotional mistreatment.’
Previously popular talk show host firmly conveyed to hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God, and Jess Hilarious that she does not have cognitive impairments and feels ‘constrained’ or ‘restricted’ at a facility located within the state of New York.
Williams added during the radio broadcast that she currently possesses just fifteen dollars, and Morrissey confiscated her previous phone, thereby limiting her to a device that is capable of making calls but not receiving them.
At a certain point, Wendy, who was put under guardianship in 2022, found herself overwhelmed and weeping. Her niece, Alex Finnie, offered comfort and stood by her side.
Shortly following the interview, people took to social media platforms to express their opinions, sparking a movement called “#FreeWendy” by some users.
It’s much like how supporters stood by Britney Spears and voiced their concerns over her 13-year conservatorship, an arrangement that concluded in November 2021.
‘Wendy Williams is literally being held captive by Sabrina Morrissey. #FreeWendy,’ one penned.
I’ve just listened to Wendy Williams on The Breakfast Club, and I noticed how passionately you all stood up for Britney Spears. It’s only fair that you extend the same support to Wendy Williams too, right? #FreeWendy
Or, more casually:
I heard Wendy Williams on The Breakfast Club today, and I can’t help but notice how you all fought for Britney Spears. Let’s show some love for Wendy as well! #FreeWendy
A supporter of X has shared a link to a Change.org petition aiming to collect signatures in support of Wendy Williams’ release from her conservatorship. If your admiration for Wendy is as immense as mine, please take a moment to sign the petition!
One posted, ‘#WendyWilliams is down to just $15… it’s time for backup… who can stand up for her… I can’t bear to hear Wendy in this state… Who is her protector? It’s high time we discuss #FreeWendy.’
1. Wendy asserts that she currently has $15 due to the fact that her money is secured in a lock-up. Another individual expressed this by saying, “Wendy Williams seems incredibly articulate at the moment… no husband! #FreeWendy!!!” (Informal)
2. Wendy claims to have 15 dollars on hand since her cash is confined within a lock-up, someone else put it in simpler terms, “Wendy Williams sure sounds crystal clear today… no husband! #FreeWendy!!!” (Casual)
3. Wendy states that she possesses $15 as her money is kept locked up. Another supporter commented, “Wow, Wendy Williams is speaking so clearly! No husband needed! #FreeWendy!!!” (Relaxed)
4. Wendy declares that she owns 15 dollars because her funds are securely stored away. Another spectator remarked on her clarity, “Wendy Williams sounds crystal-clear today… no man required! #FreeWendy!!!” (Conversational)
It was stated that it’s heartbreaking to listen to Wendy Williams on The Breakfast Club, as her caretaker, Sabrina Morrissey, appears to be pushing her towards mental distress.
Wendy isn’t permitted to own a phone or laptop, she’s not free to choose her doctors, and she’s also restricted from buying personal items through shopping. #FreeWendy
One said, ‘Wendy is weeping uncontrollably… due to her fear that her phone might be taken away or transferred for speaking today, and her loved ones won’t be informed about it.’
This morning, I listened to Wendy Williams on The Breakfast Club. It’s high time that conservatorship ends!” said a fan.
Addressing Sabrina Morrissey, it’s crucial that you grant Wendy the freedom she deserves, enabling her to connect with her family whenever she chooses, under her own terms. Let’s support #FreeWendy!
The person wrote, ‘If you all can liberate Britney to dance with her knives for eternity, then you all can also free Wendy!’. In simpler terms, the message is asking that if people have the power to set free Britney to perform a certain act for an indefinite period, then they should also be able to release someone named Wendy from a similar situation.
‘Whoa the #WendyWilliams interview on @breakfastclubam was enlightening,’ an X user shared.
I appreciate your thorough explanation of both conservatorship and guardianship. Wendy presented herself with clarity, intelligence, and eloquence throughout her discussion.
Or:
It was great to see a clear breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages between conservatorship and guardianship. Wendy spoke articulately and intelligently during the conversation.
Or:
Your explanation of conservatorship and guardianship, including their respective pros and cons, was very helpful. Wendy’s presentation was impressive with her clear thinking and well-articulated points.
One commented, “Hearing Wendy Williams on the radio after years made me cry quite a bit, I truly hope she’s doing well under any circumstances…
‘I’m listening to the Breakfast Club interview with Wendy, and it’s terrible what they’re doing to her. It’s not right that anyone should have to live like this.’)
During her appearance on the radio program, Williams passionately appealed for her release and shared details about the New York institution where she currently resides.
The celebrity expressed that although they don’t have cognitive impairments, they feel like they’re confined in a prison-like environment. They explained, ‘I find myself surrounded by individuals who are mostly in their 90s, 80s, and 70s. There seems to be something unusual about the residents on this floor.’
1. I’m quite solitary, really. Interacting with the locals isn’t my forte. I usually prefer to keep my door shut.
OR
2. I tend to be on the lonely side, truth be told. Chatting with the residents here isn’t really my thing. I usually like keeping my door locked.
‘Wendy mentioned that she enjoys watching television, listening to the radio, observing from the window, and passing her time right here as her life unfolds.’
On the call, Alex, her niece, chimed in as well, adding that Williams resides in a place equipped with a bed, a chair, a television, a bathroom, and she has a view of buildings from a window across the street.
Alex mentioned that she’s consistently present each day, regardless of the time, and throughout every week and month. However, it seems she isn’t receiving adequate sunlight.
I traveled to New York City in October to see her. However, the intense security measures and numerous questions I encountered such as, “Who are you? What are you doing here? What’s your reason for being here?”, made the experience utterly dreadful.
It was additionally found out that Wendy is unable to receive phone calls and lacks internet connectivity or access to a computer or laptop.
The TV personality shared that for the past three years, she’s celebrated her birthdays all by herself at the institution. She referred to this situation as “emotional abuse.
In this situation, you’re not permitted to depart or receive guests. As a result, you’re unable to step outside for a walk, embark on a journey, or visit relatives, should you desire to do so.
Williams showed signs of emotion as she voiced her desire to spend her father’s 94th birthday, which is coming up in February, by his side.
The star expressed tears as she said, ‘I’m not sure if I can visit my father on his 94th birthday. The following day doesn’t seem guaranteed either,'” or simply, “The star shared her uncertainty about seeing her father on his 94th birthday, and added that the next day is uncertain as well.
As a loyal follower, I stood up for my aunt Wendy during our call and clarified, ‘Anyone who knows my aunt well understands she’s always been an exceptional individual. The way she speaks is truly her – it reflects her authentic self. Please don’t misrepresent her character.’
Last year, during a conversation we had, I mentioned the subject of the 2024 Lifetime documentary titled “Where Is Wendy Williams?” as it resonated with me given our shared interest in her career.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that statement as follows: In an attempt to halt its broadcast, I, Morrissey, initiated a legal action against the network. However, instead of backing down, Lifetime and A&E retaliated by filing their own lawsuits in response.
Wendy made it clear that she was the one who desired that action, if my meaning is clear to you. Let me clarify, I strongly disapprove of any form of abuse. However, let me emphasize that the system I am part of seems flawed. This system, in my opinion, has fabricated many things.
Toward the end of last year, I found myself utterly shocked when I learned that Morrissey had submitted papers stating that Williams was ‘cognitively impaired and permanently disabled.’ As a die-hard fan, it’s hard not to be concerned about such serious allegations.
At one point during the interview, Williams questioned, ‘Do I seem that way, God d**n it?’
In my own words, let me share a situation I recently encountered: I found myself with just fifteen dollars in my pocket, yet longing for the companionship of my beloved feline friends who seemed to have vanished from my side. Despite my yearning for their presence, they appear to be nowhere in sight.
In the last month, specifically December, Wendy stepped out in public infrequently when she went to attend her son Kevin Junior’s college graduation held in Florida.
Following the festive dinner in Miami, she was noticed engaging in a passionate dispute with her caretakers.
In December, her son shared some news about her health condition as well, following the report that she had been declared ‘permanently disabled’ by her guardian.
On Instagram, media personality Charlamagne Tha God extended congratulations to Kevin Jr. on his graduation, with a post that featured Wendy appearing in good health and high spirits.
He mentioned, “Here’s a brief note about my mother. She’s now abstaining from alcohol and wishes to return home. We’re making every effort to bring this about since isolation seems to be claiming her life more rapidly than any other factor.
2023 saw the court-appointed management of a celebrity’s financial and health affairs due to a legal guardianship, with her dementia diagnosis following suit a year later.
