No Matter What Boyzone star Mikey Graham reveals why he swapped pop stardom for a reclusive life in Ireland… while one band-member admits he hasn’t spoken to him in FOUR years
For a time, he had the world at his feet.
Boyzone, with their six UK chart-topping singles, five chart-leading albums, and over 25 million records sold worldwide, stood just behind Take That in popularity during the boy band craze of the mid-90s.
However, for original band member Mikey Graham who feels disillusioned, it would be more meaningful to remember the band’s peak success years as a part of history rather than the present.
Initially peeking into a three-part Sky Documentaries series about an upcoming Irish pop band, their formation, rise to fame, and commercial triumph, Graham confesses that he had grown weary of the music business prior to his permanent departure.
Currently, Graham, who is now 52 years old, leads a wandering lifestyle in rural Ireland, a world that stands in stark contrast to the dazzling jet-setting adventures of his younger days.
In the debut trailer for No Matter What, he openly acknowledges his desire to escape and distance himself from the harmful surroundings.
In a different setting, it’s acknowledged that Ronan Keating, a past band member, has not had a conversation with Mikey (nicknamed ‘The Quiet One’ during their days with Boyzone), for the last four years.
The upcoming three-part series, airing on Sky Documentaries and NOW on February 2, offers viewers an inside look at the “rise, rifts, and heartache” experienced by the Irish band that came together in 1993 but disbanded after seven years.
A significant portion of the program will delve into the time when the late entertainer Stephen Gateley, who passed away at age 33 in October 2009, made his public announcement about being gay. This revelation was necessitated by a media outlet giving him an ultimatum.
In a brief video, you can see Louis Walsh, who is now 72 and used to be a manager, grinning as he reminisces about the attention generated by Stephen’s confession. He seems quite pleased that this revelation ended up on the front pages of newspapers.
Currently, Ronan, aged 47, is visibly emotional as he reminisces about the tragic instance when the band learned of Stephen’s demise. It was subsequently disclosed that his death was due to pulmonary edema resulting from an unidentified heart condition.
Reflecting on our humble beginnings, I can’t help but reminisce – we were just a group of young, unpolished talents thrust together. Perfection was never our strong suit back then.
In a different phrasing, when Louis, their guiding force, commented: “I have a preference for common folks as they tend to work more diligently. They are also willing to follow through with your initial plans.
In the video, this remark was among several statements the Irish manager directed towards the band during its playback. It’s worth noting that this statement is part of an ongoing dispute between the manager and the lead singer, Ronan.
At a certain moment in the preview, Shane, aged 48, remarks about collaborating with Louis. He mentions that Louis ‘assured us of the sun, moon, and all the stars.’
Instead of Louis claiming credit for arranging the band’s massive media attention with the joke: “They were swayed by their own fame. They overlooked the fact that I was the one who wrote it.
This documentary narrates the story of a legendary boy band that enjoyed immense popularity and success. However, unseen struggles such as internal conflicts, rivalries, deceit, and sorrow ultimately contributed to their disbandment.
30 years later, the original four members – Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Michael ‘Mikey’ Graham, together with their former manager Louis Walsh, are dishing out the real story behind their journey. They share the incredible peaks they experienced during their swift climb to stardom and the significant personal sacrifices each of them made while being part of a boyband.
Boyzone: No Matter What air Sunday 2 February on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW.
