A new World War II movie with a blockbuster cast is coming to theaters in just three weeks.
Films about World War II are considered classics and have significantly shaped how we understand the historical events. Notable examples include Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, and David Lean’s The Bridge on the River Kwai. Collectively, these four films have earned 22 Academy Awards, with The Bridge on the River Kwai and Schindler’s List both winning the award for Best Picture.
I’m really excited for this new WWII movie, Pressure, coming out on May 29th! It stars Brendan Fraser as General Eisenhower and Andrew Scott as Captain James Stagg, and it focuses on the incredibly tense 72 hours before D-Day. The movie’s all about this meteorologist, Captain Stagg, trying to persuade Eisenhower to postpone the invasion because of the weather – it was a huge risk, considering it would have been the largest and most dangerous seaborne invasion ever attempted. It sounds like a really gripping story!
The film Pressure features a talented cast including Kerry Condon, Chris Messina, and Damian Lewis, alongside Henry Ashton, Con O’Neill, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Toby Williams, and Max Croes. Anthony Maras directed the movie, and he co-wrote the screenplay with David Haig, who originally wrote the story as a play in 2014.
Many films have depicted D-Day, famously including the opening of Saving Private Ryan. However, Pressure offers a different angle, focusing on the crucial 72 hours leading up to the invasion, rather than the battle itself. The movie also shines a light on a lesser-known figure: meteorologist James Stagg. Though not a household name, Stagg’s expertise was essential to predicting the weather and making D-Day’s success – and the war’s turning point – possible.
Considering the film’s topic and how well World War II movies typically do at the Oscars, Pressure looks like a strong contender for awards this year. Brendan Fraser already won an Oscar in 2023, and could be nominated – and potentially win – again. Andrew Scott has been nominated for Primetime Emmys for his work on Black Mirror and Ripley, but hasn’t received an Oscar nomination yet. His performance in Pressure as Stagg could finally change that.
Kerry Condon, who also starred in The Banshees of Inisherin, was nominated for an Oscar in 2023 – the same year Brendan Fraser won his award. Since then, Condon’s career has continued to grow with prominent roles in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Train Dreams, and F1. Many believe her portrayal of Kay Summersby could earn her another Oscar nomination and potentially her first win.
Besides potentially winning awards, the film Pressure gives audiences a chance to see Brendan Fraser on the big screen before he returns as Rick O’Connell in The Mummy 4. The sequel, which also stars Rachel Weisz, is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 15, 2027.
