David Geffen’s former Malibu mansion he sold for a whopping $85 million to Los Angeles Dodgers owner burns to the ground in Palisades fire
The Malibu beachfront mansion that once belonged to music tycoon David Geffen was among those severely damaged by the Palisades fire, like several others along the coastline.
In the year 2017, the legendary figure in music, who was then 81 years old, disposed of his renowned residence, situated on land that was once property of Doris Day. This estate changed hands for an impressive sum of $85 million.
In 1983, he got permission to construct his house with the stipulation that he should create a public walkway leading to the beach. However, he did not comply with this requirement, instead initiating a legal action in 2002 aimed at preventing public access entirely.
After a lengthy three-year court case, he agreed in 2005 to construct a public access path, which became known as the highly publicized ‘Malibu Beach Controversy’.
He ultimately sold the home in 2017, which at the time was a record price for Malibu real estate.
Initially, the purchaser remained unclear; however, it was subsequently disclosed that the buyer was indeed Mark Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners. Notably, this company holds ownership over the Major League Baseball team based in Los Angeles, the Dodgers (as reported by LA Curbed).

Currently, the property stands blackened and devastated, its garage front appearing severely damaged by the fire.
Though several walls seem intact, they’re charred by the fire, and numerous areas within the house continue to burn.
The exact extent of the damage isn’t yet clear, but it’s certain that the house was affected by the Palisades Fire.
The Palisades Fire has spread across an astonishing 15,000 acres, prompting widespread evacuations in the surrounding region.
A variety of well-known figures including Miles Teller, Eugene Levy, Anthony Hopkins, Adam Brody, Leighton Meester, John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Anna Faris, Paris Hilton, Spencer Pratt, and Heidi Montag, Mark Hamill, James Woods, among others, have unfortunately had their homes destroyed by the ongoing wildfire.
The blaze rapidly advanced due to winds blowing at speeds exceeding 99 miles per hour, causing devastation in Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and other areas.
Among many ongoing wildfires in Southern California, there are several significant ones such as the Eaton Fire which has scorched over 10,000 acres, the Hurst Fire covering about 700 acres, the Lidia Fire consuming approximately 80 acres, and the Woodley Fire affecting around 30 acres.
This residence stands on the well-known Carbon Beach, often referred to as Billionaire’s Beach, which boasts famous residents like Janet Jackson, Courteney Cox, and Leonardo DiCaprio among others.
Back in the 1970s, during my enthusiastic years as a property investor, I acquired a piece of land initially divided into five plots. Over time, I skillfully merged these into just two expansive lots, upon which I eventually constructed my cherished residence.
Although he decided to grant the general public access to the beach located on his land, this was in compliance with the California Coastal Act of 1976.
I yielded to the rule that grants any individual like me, a member of the public, unfettered access to beaches across the state.
He was even accused of building false garage doors where his land met the Pafific Coast Highway.
