James Corden and Ruth Jones reveal the one big reason Gavin & Stacey could never return for more episodes – after success of the Christmas finale
As a die-hard Gavin & Stacey fan, with over a decade of my life intertwined with their hilarious antics and heartwarming moments, I can honestly say that the final episode was nothing short of perfection. The long-awaited reunion of Smithy and Nessa, the emotional rollercoaster, the witty banter, and the familiar faces all made for a nostalgic, tear-jerking finale that I will cherish forever.
I’ve watched them grow from awkward, long-distance lovers to a couple navigating life’s ups and downs, and it’s been an absolute joy to be part of their journey. The fact that they’re finally together now means that we can never see the bins being put out at Brynmawr again – but hey, who needs clean bins when you have love, laughter, and the West-Shipman clan?
I must admit, I was already in floods of tears just a few minutes into the Fond Farewell documentary. It’s like they say, it takes a Gavin & Stacey fan to truly understand the depth of our feelings for this show! And as the final credits rolled, I couldn’t help but feel a tad empty, knowing that there would be no more late-night laughter or early-morning cringes.
But fear not, fellow fans, for James and Ruth have a book due out next Autumn called When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between: A Story Of Love And Friendship. So, while we might not get to see Smithy and Nessa on our screens again, we’ll at least have their tales of love and friendship between the pages of a good old-fashioned book!
And as a final jest, I can’t help but wonder if Smithy will finally learn how to put those bins out correctly… or if he’ll leave that task to Nessa, just like he did everything else in their relationship!
James Corden and Ruth Jones have disclosed the major factor that prevents Gavin & Stacey from producing additional episodes.
On Wednesday night, following the Christmas Day finale, the actors who played Smithy and Nessa participated in the documentary titled “A Bitter-Sweet Goodbye,” sharing their thoughts.
For five long years, viewers eagerly anticipated discovering what became of the cherished characters from the BBC sitcom, wondering if Smithy had finally agreed to Nessa’s marriage proposal.
Ultimately, the duo reunited during the last episode, causing joy among viewers; however, their relationship marks the conclusion of the series.
In the documentary, James stated: “It seemed like their fate was sealed ever since our first Christmas special, when Dave proposed and Smithy responded with ‘Don’t marry him’. From that moment on, it felt as if they were destined to part ways.
“In the final scene, he admits, ‘We’re flawed and imperfect, which is why things aren’t always neat and tidy.’
After that, Ruth mentioned: ‘Since Smithy and Nessa paired up, it essentially marks the end for us, as we’ll rarely witness them appearing together.’
‘Seeing Smithy put the bins out, it just won’t work.’
A week following the final episode of Gavin and Stacey airing on television, BBC offered fans an opportunity to bid adieu to the comedy series through a documentary.
Almost immediately after the start of the hour-long broadcast, viewers admitted they were already weeping profusely, grappling with the realization that the iconic sitcom would no longer grace our screens.
The documentary provided a peek behind the scenes of the eagerly anticipated finale, while also reflecting on the series’ beginnings and its 17-year journey.
As the special commenced, some enthusiasts confessed that they were quite disorganized during its initial moments.
Posts on X included: ‘I’m already a mess one minute in;
‘I’m already getting emosh with this fond farewell;
‘I’m not sure I’ve recovered emotionally enough to watch this;
‘2 minutes into the Gavin & Stacey Fond Farewell and already I’m in tears.’
On Christmas Day, Gavin and Stacey’s Final Episode garnered an impressive viewership of 12.5 million, making it the most-watched program of the day.
For five long years, viewers eagerly anticipated uncovering the destiny of the cherished characters from the BBC sitcom, wondering if Smithy would finally say yes to Nessa’s marriage proposal.
Viewers praised the concluding episode as ‘outstanding,’ shedding tears when they watched the long-lasting series end after 17 years on television.
10 million viewers chose BBC over other channels during primetime, making them victorious in the ratings game, with many tuning in to catch the comeback of Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
The show, initially aired in 2007 following the creative minds of James Corden and Ruth Jones, wrapped up with perennial on-again, off-again lovers Smithy and Nessa publicly declaring their affection for each other and getting married, albeit after encountering several bumps in the road.
Initially, Smithy was planned to marry his girlfriend Sonia. However, it became clear that he hadn’t responded to Nessa’s proposal, leaving their relationship status unresolved in the show’s 2019 Christmas Special.
However, only after the Shipman/West family conceded their error, did Smithy confess his feelings for Nessa. He chose a heartfelt moment at Southampton Docks to propose to her.
Or,
It wasn’t until the entire Shipman/West family admitted they were wrong that Smithy revealed his affection for Nessa. In a touching scene at Southampton Docks, he proposed to her.
Later on, the scene shifted to Smithy and Nessa finally exchanging their wedding vows in a heartfelt ceremony held in Barry. As the series concluded, there was an emotional sequence showing the family celebrating the event at The Dolphin pub, followed by them taking a group photo together.
Additionally, James and Ruth will release another book titled “When Gavin Met Stacey and All That Came After: A Tale of Love and Camaraderie,” expected to hit shelves this coming Autumn.
Despite ruling out a return to the series, James has said he wants to work with Rith again.
He expressed that it’s uncertain whether we possess another creative thought, but truthfully speaking, if we didn’t make an effort to collaborate on writing and even brainstorm the concept, I would feel deeply disappointed.
