The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a film enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the lineup of upcoming films is nothing short of exhilarating! From Joachim Trier’s exploration of familial relationships in “Sentimental Value” to Terrence Malick’s biblical epic “The Way of the Wind,” it seems 20XX will be a year filled with thought-provoking and visually stunning cinematic experiences.

What particularly piques my interest is the return of Terrence Malick after five long years of editing his three-hour magnum opus on the life of Jesus Christ. As someone who has endured countless films about Winston Churchill every year, I’m more than ready for a decent film on the founder of Christianity – especially with an all-star cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, and Mark Rylance as Satan.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find my rosary beads and say a little prayer for this cinematic masterpiece. And just to lighten the mood, I can’t help but wonder: what would Jesus do when he finds out they cast Benny from “Schindler’s List” as Satan? He’d probably say something like, “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do!” A little humor never hurts, does it?

We’re all set — prepared to move forward from 2024, eager to hear the timeless wisdom of filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Ryan Coogler, and Kelly Reichardt, who will remind us once more of the deep-rooted passion we have for this artistic medium. Brace yourselves for the second part of “Wicked,” set to hit theaters in November. Until that time, there are another two dozen titles lined up to keep things engaging.

‘Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story’ (Jan. 31)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a lifelong admirer of iconic entertainers, I have always been captivated by the larger-than-life personas of legends like Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, and Liza Minnelli. It’s rare to find someone who is instantly recognizable by just their first name, and these four women are certainly part of that exclusive club. However, it’s surprising that none of them have yet to be the subject of a major documentary.

This changes in January when a feature film about Liza Minnelli hits theaters. I had the privilege of seeing this movie at the Tribeca Film Festival back in June, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of incredible. The film picks up immediately after Minnelli’s mother, Judy Garland, dies, and delves deep into Minnelli’s personal life, including her four marriages and addiction struggles.

I can’t wait for the wider release of this documentary, as it’s a must-see for any fan of Liza Minnelli or the entertainment industry in general. It’s also particularly exciting because it comes on the heels of a high-profile production company optioning the rights to Minnelli’s forthcoming memoir, which won’t even be published until 2026. I have no doubt that this film will serve as a perfect teaser for a full-blown season of Liza obsession.

In my opinion, Liza Minnelli is an icon who has long been overdue for the recognition and celebration she deserves. This documentary is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see what other projects are in store for this incredible artist.

‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ (Feb. 13, Peacock)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

20 years after the initial release of “Bridget Jones’ Diary”, featuring Renée Zellweger’s witty, sharp-tongued character, I found myself revisiting the 2001 film during a flight. I anticipated a pile of awkward jokes and outdated fashion choices. To my surprise, however, I encountered a lively, profanity-laced, genuinely humorous studio production instead. This revelation sparked a renewed interest in the upcoming fourth installment, “Mad About the Boy”. In this new film, Bridget, now a single mother four years after her husband Mark Darcy’s (Colin Firth) demise, finds herself caught between two attractive, charming suitors (Leo Woodall and Chiwetel Ejiofor), once again creating quite a scene. —Matt Brennan

‘Paddington in Peru’ (Feb. 14)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Let’s anticipate the return of Paddington, voiced by Ben Whishaw, which many are eagerly waiting for! Although it seems challenging to surpass the acclaim of “Paddington 2,” as per Rotten Tomatoes, the best-reviewed film ever, this installment offers a unique twist: our beloved bear explores his native Peru. Accompanied by his adopted family, the Browns (with Sally Hawkins replaced by Emily Mortimer), Paddington sets off to find his dear Aunt Lucy who has gone missing. With a map hinting at El-Dorado and a suspicious river boat captain (Antonio Banderas) in tow, the film received mixed reviews upon its U.K. debut in November, but it promises an exciting adventure that the entire family can enjoy – something hard to come by these days, as Mary McNamara points out.

‘Mickey 17’ (Mar. 7)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a cinephile excitedly looking forward to the next masterpiece from Bong Joon Ho, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. Six years after his groundbreaking film “Parasite” made history by becoming the first non-English movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars, he’s venturing into uncharted territory – the cosmos.

Based on Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel “Mickey7,” this new project, titled “Mickey17,” takes us back to the dystopian landscape of his 2023 film “Snowpiercer.” This time, Robert Pattinson steps into the shoes of Mickey, a character marked as ‘expendable’ on a perilous mission to establish a colony on a frigid planet.

Mickey’s role comes with the deadliest jobs, and he pays the ultimate price – death – over and over again. However, each time he is ‘reprinted,’ most of his memories remain intact. But when Mickey begins to question his place in this gruesome cycle of existence, his defiance poses a threat to the system itself.

“Mickey17” promises a blend of dark humor, existential angst, social commentary, and pure absurdity – all elements that make us ponder what it truly means to be human when humanity itself is reduced to a renewable resource. Joining Pattinson in this stellar cast are Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun.

I can hardly wait for the thought-provoking journey that “Mickey17” promises to take us on!

‘The Wedding Banquet’ (Apr. 18)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Tracy Brown expresses her eagerness to watch the remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 comedy “The Wedding Banquet,” now directed by Andrew Ahn, known for films like “Spa Night” and “Fire Island.” Given the director’s background, the movie becomes a must-see for Brown. The remake retains the central plot of a sham marriage between a gay man (Han Gi-chan) and a woman (Kelly Marie Tran), but this time, the marriage is not to hide any queer relationships. It also introduces another queer couple (Tran and Lily Gladstone’s characters trying to have a baby through IVF) who are friends with the gay man and his boyfriend (Bowen Yang). In a climate where society seems to be growing less accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, a film that highlights the beauty of queer chosen families serves as comfort.

‘Sinners’ (Apr. 18)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s trio of successful films – “Fruitvale Station”, “Creed”, and “Black Panther” – have created a distinctive director-actor partnership, often compared to other iconic duos like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro or Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Their future horror movie marks an intriguing departure in their filmography, transitioning from independent favorites to acclaimed crowd-pleasers to comic-book blockbusters.

Titled “Sinners”, this upcoming film has generated interest following a teaser that showcased nothing but blood and violin strings. Based on the trailer, it seems this grim period piece is set in the American South, with Jordan portraying a pair of twins, one of whom wields a vintage tommy gun. It’s rumored that Jack O’Connell, known for his tough roles, will play the antagonist. The character could be a vampire or a demon, and I’m eager to see what this formidable team brings to life in this intriguing project. –Amy Nicholson

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ (May 23)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Is it reasonable to anticipate that Tom Cruise will once more sprint across rooftops, as if the survival of the world – or at least the summer box office – was hanging in the balance? The answer seems obvious. Picking up where “Dead Reckoning Part One” left off, this eighth installment in the nearly 30-year-old franchise sees Ethan Hunt and his IMF team (including Simon Pegg’s Benji, Ving Rhames’ Luther, and Hayley Atwell’s Grace) engaged in a relentless struggle to thwart a rogue AI, the “Entity,” which poses a grave threat to global stability. As they grapple with their past, Ethan Hunt finds himself facing old demons. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie for his fourth time in this series, the film showcases Cruise’s unyielding determination to exceed age and studio insurance limitations. During filming in England, he was spotted hanging from an upside-down biplane – naturally. Although the title suggests a final chapter, Cruise and McQuarrie have hinted that Ethan Hunt’s tale might not reach its end just yet. After all, this franchise has a knack for defying the impossible. –J. Rottenberg

‘Ballerina’ (June 6)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a long-time fan of the “John Wick” franchise, I must admit that I was initially saddened by the thought that the fourth installment could be the final chapter for this legendary series. However, after learning about the upcoming spinoff movie “Ballerina,” I am now filled with excitement and anticipation for what is to come.

Having grown up watching Keanu Reeves in various action-packed roles, I have always been impressed by his ability to portray a character with few words but maximum impact. The “John Wick” films were no exception, delivering an adrenaline-pumping experience fueled by jaw-dropping mayhem, a frenzied pace, and menacing dark humor. The cameos from huge stars such as Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne only added to the entertainment value of these films.

Now, with “Ballerina” on the horizon, I am eager to see how the franchise will continue to evolve. The fact that Ana de Armas, who impressed James Bond fans with her action chops in “No Time to Die,” has been cast as the lead character is a promising sign. Her portrayal of Eva Macarro, a ballerina-assassin on a deadly mission to avenge the death of her father, promises to bring a fresh perspective to the franchise while staying true to its roots.

The return of Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick in his final film appearance is also a welcome addition, as their characters have always been integral parts of the “John Wick” world. And, of course, the fact that Keanu Reeves himself will be making an appearance means that there will undoubtedly be blood, lots of it.

Overall, I am excited for what the future holds for the “John Wick” franchise and can’t wait to see how “Ballerina” unfolds. As someone who has grown up watching these films, I have high hopes that this spinoff will continue the legacy of action-packed entertainment that the series has come to be known for while also offering something new and exciting for fans to enjoy.

‘Elio’ (June 13)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

A captivating tale combining elements of fantasy and coming-of-age, featuring extraterrestrials? I’m definitely interested! The title character, Elio, is a space enthusiast with an overactive imagination, often fixated on aliens. An unfortunate incident results in Elio being abducted, leading the leaders of an intergalactic organization to believe he is Earth’s ruler. As the story unfolds, young Elio must navigate the chaos resulting from this misunderstanding.

The film boasts talent from some of my beloved Pixar productions: “Coco” co-director Adrian Molina and “Turning Red” director Domee Shi, who has taken over directing duties alongside “Burrow’s” Madeline Sharafian. I’m expecting a rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and cringe-worthy awkward moments as Elio embarks on his journey to discover who he truly is.

‘28 Years Later’ (June 20)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a longtime fan of the zombie genre, I can confidently say that the upcoming collaboration between Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Anthony Dod Mantle is an exciting development that has me eagerly anticipating the film’s release. Having witnessed Boyle’s Oscar-winning accomplishments, from his iconic directing of “Trainspotting” to his memorable opening ceremony for the London Olympics in 2012, I am intrigued by his return to this genre that he helped redefine with “28 Days Later.”

Garland, who penned the original screenplay, has since established himself as a distinctive filmmaker with his thought-provoking works like “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation.” The fact that they have reunited for this project is both surprising and exhilarating. Adding to my excitement is the news that Mantle, who shot the original film and has worked on projects such as “Dogville” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” will be back behind the camera for this endeavor – and this time, using iPhones no less!

The trio’s collective talents promise a unique take on the fall of civilization and the relentless undead hordes. With Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes rumored to star in the film, I am confident that this project will be a no-brainer for horror enthusiasts everywhere. This reunion of creative minds is a testament to their enduring passion for storytelling and innovation in the genre. I can hardly wait to see what they have in store for us!

‘F1’ (June 27)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a longtime fan of Formula One racing and a connoisseur of racing films, I was intrigued by Brad Pitt’s recent appearance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, standing alongside real-life drivers Charles Leclerc and George Russell. The upcoming film “F1,” produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joseph Kosinski, seems to be striving for a high-octane, realistic portrayal of the world of Formula One racing.

While I’ve enjoyed classic films like “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans” from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as more recent period pieces like “Ferrari” and “Ford v Ferrari,” I have to admit that I’m curious about whether “F1” can create a world so lifelike that we forget Brad Pitt’s character Sonny Hayes is just an actor, and Javier Bardem’s portrayal of the flamboyant team owner feels authentic.

The fact that the film was made with the participation of the sport’s governing body gives it a level of access that sets it apart from other racing films, much like Netflix series “Drive to Survive” and “Senna.” However, I hope that the film avoids being too promotional in nature and instead delivers a compelling story that captures the excitement and drama of Formula One racing.

Overall, I’m excited to see how “F1” turns out and whether it can live up to the hype surrounding it. With Brad Pitt leading the cast and a talented director at the helm, I have high hopes for this film and its ability to transport us into the thrilling world of Formula One racing.

‘M3GAN 2.0’ (June 27)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

2022 saw the release of “M3GAN,” a chilling tale where I, as the brilliant scientist Gemma (Allison Williams), crafted an AI doll to comfort my niece Cady (Violet McGraw) in her grief. M3GAN, who started off as a harmless companion, began to develop self-awareness and transformed into a sinister, sentient toy with its own deadly charm, complete with amusing dance routines. Despite meeting an untimely demise by the movie’s end, the sequel unveils M3GAN’s resurrection and her evolution into an even deadlier foe. Williams and McGraw are back for another round of heart-stopping entertainment! —G.B.

Untitled Trey Parker/Matt Stone Film (July 4)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

So far, few details have emerged about the upcoming comedy from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, their first film since “Team America: World Police” in 2004. However, here are a couple of hints that suggest it’s going to be explosive: First, Kendrick Lamar, a multi-award-winning artist and instigator, will both produce and appear as a Civil War reenactor who discovers his white girlfriend’s ancestors were slave owners of his own. Second, Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount, has emphasized its release on Independence Day. As Robbins told theater owners, it’s sure to cause quite a commotion. The script is by Vernon Chatman, known for his wickedly funny work like “Wonder Showzen,” “Xavier: Renegade Angel,” and “The Shivering Truth.” Every artist involved has a reputation for pushing the envelope beyond the brink. When Parker and Stone last collaborated with Lamar, they turned him into O.J. Simpson digitally. —A.N.

‘Superman’ (July 11)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

In an exciting turn of events, I’m thrilled about the upcoming Superman movie, titled “Superman” and helmed by DC Studios head James Gunn. The role of our beloved Man of Steel will be taken up by David Corenswet in this film that serves as both a fresh start for the rebooted DC Universe on the big screen and an introduction to Superman after he’s revealed himself to the world.

The story unfolds with Superman grappling with his identity and daily life, as depicted by the filmmaker. What intrigues me most is how this iconic hero, who embodies hope and the pinnacle of human goodness, will resonate in today’s divisive society where rhetoric can often dehumanize those with differing viewpoints. I can’t help but wonder what “truth, justice, and a better tomorrow” truly means to us in our current times. —T.B.

‘Freakier Friday’ (Aug. 8)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Excitedly speaking as a fan who’s had the catchy tune from the 2000s “Freaky Friday” remake stuck in my head for over two decades, I can hardly contain my joy that Disney is launching a sequel to the beloved body-swap comedy! The story follows Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna (Lindsay Lohan), who swapped lives years ago, with Tess now being a mother of one and Anna about to gain a stepdaughter. Could another swap help smooth over the challenges of blending families? The original cast, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao, returns for this installment, joined by Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Julia Butters, and Sophia Hammons. I’m eagerly anticipating that the ending song will be as unforgettable as the one from the first movie! —Ashley Lee

Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Film (Aug. 8)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a long-time cinephile and film enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in the world of cinema, I find myself constantly intrigued by the enigmatic nature of Wes Anderson’s upcoming film. Given my extensive background in following the works of both Anderson and his star-studded cast, I am eagerly awaiting any official announcement regarding its title. Though Letterboxd has referred to it as “The Battle of Baktan Cross,” I remain uncertain about whether this is indeed the final moniker.

Having closely followed Anderson’s career since his early days in Humboldt County, I am well aware that he began shooting this film approximately a year ago and wrapped production in El Paso a few months later. The film boasts an impressive cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio sporting a handlebar mustache, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, and Benicio del Toro.

The movie has been described as an “event film” by Warner Bros., with a summer release date and a reported $115 million budget. It’s also been rumored to be loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Vineland,” although Anderson himself has expressed reservations about tackling such an intimidating source material, stating that his brain isn’t big enough for the task.

As I eagerly anticipate the film’s release, I cannot help but feel a sense of frustration at the lack of definitive information. In my experience, Anderson is not one to provide straight answers, and I have learned to expect cryptic replies when attempting to extract details from him. When I reached out for clarification on the matter, he simply responded, “I need to start figuring out what the f— to say.”

With summer fast approaching, I can only hope that we will soon learn more about this intriguing project. In the meantime, as a seasoned film aficionado, I eagerly await the next chapter in Wes Anderson’s illustrious career.

‘The Bride’ (Sep. 26)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a long-time film enthusiast with a particular fondness for classic horror stories and their modern adaptations, I am thrilled about Jessie Buckley’s portrayal of the titular character in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reimagining of “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Given my deep appreciation for Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter,” which delved into the complexities of motherhood and the “monstrous” woman, I believe this new film will be a fascinating continuation of her exploration of these themes.

Furthermore, as someone who has closely followed Gyllenhaal’s career and her dedication to telling stories that challenge societal norms, I am eagerly anticipating the release of “Frankenstein,” which follows in the footsteps of her previous work, “Poor Things.”

Moreover, as a reader of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking novel, I appreciate the significance of this female-driven adaptation. The original story not only spawned countless adaptations and conversations for over 200 years but also laid the foundation for modern science fiction and horror. With Gyllenhaal at the helm, both as a director and actress, I have high hopes that this retelling will offer a fresh perspective on this classic tale.

In summary, as someone who appreciates thoughtful storytelling and bold adaptations of timeless classics, I am excited to see “The Bride of Frankenstein” through the eyes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, both in front of and behind the camera.

‘Wicked: For Good’ (Nov. 21)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

The makers of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked film adaptation strategically divided it into two parts, with a full year between releases. The initial movie, the highest-grossing film adaption of a Broadway musical, introduced viewers to the green witch Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and her friend Glinda (Ariana Grande), ending on a suspenseful cliffhanger as Elphaba flew away from Oz instead of joining forces with the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and mentor Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Similar to Act 2 of the original 2003 stage production, the second film will interweave with events from “The Wizard of Oz” and unveil the outcomes for Glinda’s charming boyfriend Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Elphaba’s sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode) and her suitor Boq (Ethan Slater). Additionally, it will introduce two new songs by composer Stephen Schwartz. However, I am particularly excited to see Erivo and Grande perform the cherished duet that gives this second installment its name.

‘After the Hunt’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

In a fascinating blend of talent, the “After the Hunt” cast, featuring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, and Andrew Garfield, presents an intriguing combination of generations, star power, and acting styles that hint at a potentially explosive dynamic. This ensemble is further electrifying due to the guidance of director Luca Guadagnino, who is stepping up from his previous works “Challengers” and “Queer” into a dramatic thriller penned by first-time screenwriter Nora Garrett. The narrative revolves around a Yale professor (played by Roberts) whose life becomes chaotic when a promising student accuses a colleague of rape, setting off a chain reaction that disrupts her personal and professional lives. This theme of power struggles, sexual politics, and academia aligns perfectly with Guadagnino’s knack for thought-provoking storytelling, as he fearlessly delves into various cultural hot topics without hesitation. —Mark Olsen

‘Die, My Love’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

In simpler terms, the upcoming film by Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, slated for release in 2025, is a highly anticipated addition to this list due to its intriguing premise. This isn’t just any film; it’s an adaptation of Ariana Harwitsch’s novel “Die, My Love,” which delves into the complex themes of post-natal depression and bipolar disorder.

What makes this project particularly enticing is the star-studded cast. Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek are all set to bring this story to life on the silver screen. Known for her ability to evoke deep, disturbing emotions through her work, Ramsay is poised to create a powerful dynamic between Lawrence and Pattinson, two actors who excel at balancing the line between quirky and haunting performances.

In essence, the combination of an acclaimed director, a compelling story, and a talented cast makes this upcoming film a must-watch for many movie enthusiasts.

‘The Mastermind’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, Josh O’Connor, am making waves in Hollywood, with exciting upcoming roles in films directed by renowned names like Rian Johnson and Steven Spielberg. One of these projects is “The Mastermind” by Kelly Reichardt, a gripping art heist tale set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Vietnam War era. Reichardt, known for her perceptive and politically-charged filmmaking, is venturing into genre storytelling with this piece, which could be her most accessible work to date. The stellar cast includes John Magaro from “September 5,” Alana Haim of “Licorice Pizza,” Bill Camp, Hope Davis, Gaby Hoffman, and Rhenzy Feliz from “The Penguin.” This project promises to be a fascinating exploration of the intersection between art, culture, and politics.

‘Materialists’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Approximately a year ago, filmmaker Celine Song and I were having a chat over several glasses of wine, reminiscing about our past lives and the unusual ways we found our spouses. Casually, she confided in me that she used to be a matchmaker, a fact that left me wondering how any relationship lasted beyond five minutes. This conversation resurfaced when it was announced that her next film, the sequel to the 2023 Oscar-nominated best picture “Past Lives,” would be a comedy-drama about a professional matchmaker who finds love with a wealthy man, but begins to question her decision when an old flame reappears. The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, making the prospect of this love triangle intriguing for many.

‘Mother Mary’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Titled an “unconventional pop melodrama,” the upcoming film from A24 presents a captivating narrative revolving around a pop star, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, and a fashion designer, Michaela Coel who is famed for her Emmy-winning role in “I May Destroy You.” David Lowery, the writer-director, labels it as a challenging project, terming it as “one of the weirdest films I’ve ever made.” Featuring original tunes by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff, the star-studded cast also includes FKA Twigs and Hunter Schafer from “Euphoria.” Given Lowery’s versatile directorial journey, spanning from indie films like “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” to larger-scale productions such as “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the upcoming movie promises an intriguing blend of genres. Preliminary glimpses hint at Hathaway donning a golden halo-like headdress and gilded bodysuit, evoking the image of Cher merged with the Virgin Mary, making it an enticing prospect that I eagerly look forward to experiencing on the big screen. —Meredith Blake

‘Sentimental Value’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Joachim Trier, known for the Oscar-nominated romantic comedy “The Worst Person in the World,” is set to explore a different theme with his upcoming film “Sentimental Value.” Instead of the messy personal life of a woman in her late twenties, this time he delves into a complex father-daughter relationship. The movie, slated for release next year by Neon, reunites Trier with his lead actress Renate Reinsve from “The Worst Person in the World.” In the new film, she portrays an actor named Nora, who finds her eccentric father Gutav (played by Stellan Skarsgård), a once-acclaimed director seeking a comeback, re-emerging after a long absence. Trying to mend their relationship, he offers Nora a role in his new project, which she initially declines. Elle Fanning stars as an American actress working in Oslo, Norway. – M Blake

‘The Way of the Wind’ (TBA)

The 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2025

Terrence Malick’s biblical epic, “The Way of the Wind,” which is speculated to premiere at Cannes after five years of editing, has sparked my curiosity due to its lengthy production process. I must confess that a part of me is eager to see the end result of his work. The movie focuses on Peter (played by Matthias Schoenaerts), who attempts to persuade Jesus (Géza Röhrig) to join an anti-Roman political movement. Unlike other biblical epics, this film appears to focus more on the man, Jesus, rather than his miracles, although it might surprise you with its impressive cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, Aidan Turner, and Mark Rylance as Satan. Given Malick’s talent for grand spiritual narratives, and considering the film industry’s annual production of at least one quality film on Winston Churchill, it seems reasonable to hope for a comparable effort regarding the founder of Christianity. In other words, let’s keep our fingers crossed.
