Adorable reason Strictly Chris McCausland’s daughter DIDN’T want him to do BBC show – as blind comedian shares torment he couldn’t be a ‘proper dad’
As I delve into the captivating journey of Chris, a Strictly Come Dancing contestant, I am struck by the profound beauty of his life story. Born and raised in Liverpool, he has traversed the path of life with a tenacity that is as inspiring as it is heartwarming.
Chris McCausland is set to compete in the grand finale of Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night.
The 47-year-old comedian, who’s been blind since his twenties due to an inherited eye condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, once disclosed that he had declined participating in a dance competition multiple times because it was “petrifying”.
In addition to his humor, he admitted that his 11-year-old daughter, Sophie, was initially apprehensive about him falling and potentially causing embarrassment.
Before the final conversation, he expressed: ‘She was frightened at the start, I believe, as she sensed my anxiety, and I wasn’t able to conceal it.’
As a lifestyle expert, I’d express this sentiment like so: “I could sense her anxiety, as she fretted about the possibility of my stumbling and potentially causing an awkward moment or even worse, humiliating myself.
Yet, she has become his most ardent supporter, eager for his success and his acquisition of the Glitter Ball Trophy.
On Saturdays, she would always say: “Daddy, it doesn’t make a difference if you go out, I believe you’ve already achieved victory.” (Chris confessed)
Later on, as we reached the semifinals, she turned to her father and said, “Dad, I remember telling you it didn’t matter, but I’ve had a change of heart. I believe you can take this competition now.
The famous player from Liverpool also shared insights about his self-discovery following his participation, expressing: ‘It’s all astounding, really – just that we could accomplish it, that we managed to pull off this feat, that we learned the dances and put on a show. It’s all quite surprising.’
Chris is the runaway favourite to lift the glitter ball trophy in tonight’s finale.
Credit for this goes to Chris’s dear wife, Patricia. It was her encouragement that led him to join the dancing competition, and she will be quietly rooting for him from the audience.
In 2013, the couple happily brought Sophie into their family, yet Chris, though he became a father then, felt unsure about his abilities as a dad.
He reflected, ‘With the responsibility of being a parent, I started worrying about not being able to perform all the tasks like my father did with me growing up. I wondered, ‘How can I do it all? I’ll only be a semi-dad.’ This thought brought a great deal of distress to my mind.’
Yet, it was Patricia Mazure, born in Brazil, who boosted his self-assurance, and currently, they reside in a modern private community in Surbiton, southwestern London, just a stone’s throw away from Kingston University, where Chris pursued computer engineering studies.
Friends mention that at first, Chris struggled significantly with parenthood due to his blindness, but he eventually figured out how to navigate this role effectively. As he puts it, “My daughter is accustomed only to me not having sight.
“She figured out that she could indicate objects to my wife by using my hand, and we learned together to do this. This is how she started communicating with us.
Apart from seeing Sophie directly, Chris managed to find an alternative solution as a computer engineer. He eloquently explained his method of animating her likeness through the use of Artificial Intelligence.
He snaps pictures of Sophie, then employs advanced technology to analyze her actions, activities, and facial expressions in those images.
Chris and Patricia’s romantic journey started in 2005, during Chris’ early days as a comedian performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Originally, she served as a television producer for Sky, crafting a show centered around festivals. Once the filming concluded, a swift bond formed between them on set, leading to increased interactions when they both returned to London.
Love flourished and solidified as they both cherished a deep affection for music. In truth, when Chris brought Patricia to witness Pearl Jam performing in London’s Hyde Park back in 2010, he secretly promised himself that he would pop the question if the band played their favorite tune, “Black”.
In the heart of the concert, they made a commitment, and with an affirmative response, she agreed. The pair tied the knot in the year 2012.
Speaking about their involvement in the competition, a buddy of the pair shared with TopMob: “Patricia is consistently confident in Chris. He was really anxious about not giving it his all in the show, yet she never had any doubts about his abilities.
She’s quite reserved and avoids being in the spotlight, yet her quietness can be misleading. Behind the scenes, she has stood by his side throughout all his steps. In essence, she’s been his unwavering support.
Next year they will celebrate 20 years together.
Chris describes his wife as being quite different from him: Although she appears to be quintessentially British, she is actually Brazilian by origin. He emphasizes this isn’t meant pejoratively, but rather acknowledges that her lifestyle mirrors the chaotic nature often associated with Brazilians – a cultural trait they embrace with pride.
“She will converse with her mom in Portuguese several times, and then I’ll ask her, ‘Are you alright, something seems wrong. It sounds like you two had a terrible disagreement.’ However, it turns out that they were just discussing their plans for the day.
She’s brimming with vitality and pushed me beyond my familiar boundaries, yet I seem to bring a chuckle from her. I was almost like a soothing influence in her life, something she found appealing; it was something she lacked.
Tonight, Chris will compete against Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri, Miranda’s Sarah Hadland, and singer JB Gill in the finale.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge that a significant chunk of his triumphs is undeniably owed to the incredible Dianne Buswell, my professional partner on Strictly. She masterfully molded our training sessions, ensuring that even with my eyes closed, I could still navigate each move with grace and precision. Her ability to describe how a dance should flow in words alone was nothing short of magical, painting vivid images in my mind that guided me through each performance.
Despite some hiccups along the way, it turned out that Chris had an unfortunate incident with the Australian dancer early on in their training sessions. Specifically, she accidentally kicked him in the face during practice, which he hadn’t seen coming.
No matter what strategy she employed, it proved successful: she never found herself among the bottom two contestants (who must dance off each week). With tonight’s voting solely in the hands of the audience – the judges’ scores hold no weight this time – she is heavily favored to emerge victorious.
Chris and Dianne are going to do their Week 8 Couple’s Choice again, which was a dance set to “Instant Karma (We All Shine On)” by John Lennon, and for their last dance, they have chosen a waltz, which is fitting since Chris is from Liverpool. The song they will dance to is the famous Liverpool football anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” by Gerry And The Pacemakers.
Perhaps the most enchanting moment came during their elegant American Smooth dance at Blackpool, as sharp-looking Chris, wearing a white tie, gracefully guided Dianne, earning a perfect 37 out of 40 from the judges – their top rating ever.
Afterward, they showcased their Wayne’s World act, where they donned costumes based on characters from the 1992 American comedy film. The crowd erupted in laughter.
