Andrew Garfield reveals We Live in Time scene that “really scared” him
As a movie enthusiast who has seen countless films and experienced various emotions they evoke, I must say that “We Live in Time” stands out as one of the most memorable ones for me due to its raw and intense scenes. The scene where Almut (Florence Pugh) shaves her head and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) takes on the responsibility was undeniably impactful, but it wasn’t the moment that gave me the most pause.
The film titled “We Live in Time” makes its cinema debut in the UK on New Year’s Day, and it’s likely that you’re already familiar with an exceptional sequence within the movie.
In the given scenario, Almut (played by Florence Pugh) decides to bald herself prior to starting chemotherapy, with Tobias (portrayed by Andrew Garfield) assuming that duty instead.
There was no camera trickery involved – it really was Garfield shaving Pugh’s hair off. But if you think that was the scene he was most worried about, you’d be mistaken.
He shared that he felt deeply honored to have the task of temporarily caring for Florence’s head under his care. Admittedly, he was quite anxious about the responsibility, ensuring he didn’t cause harm to anyone and provided a clean, even trim.” He conveyed this sentiment to Digital Spy.
Can I recall a moment when I was extremely frightened? Perhaps it was while ice skating, as I’m truly terrible on the ice. Skating has never come easily to me. Florence always enjoyed watching me stumble around like a deer on ice.
Pugh mentioned, “To be honest, I’m not exceptional either, but I think I could manage. I attended a couple of ten-year-olds’ birthday parties when I was ten years old myself.
Just like her fellow actor, Pugh viewed the baldness scene as a significant honor and didn’t feel intimidated by it.
Instead, it was the childbirth scene in “We Live in Time” that she felt strongly about portraying accurately. She had heard so many birth stories that left her thinking, “This needs to be right.
“It was incredible, but it was exhausting. We were doing the scenes for about, I’d say, 15 minutes, and the scene was obviously a bit longer when we shot it, but it was amazing.
During each take, we found ourselves breathless and drenched in sweat, yet it was an incredibly moving experience to be part of the filming process and witness the creation. It truly felt unique and extraordinary.
Director John Crowley was equally aware of the hurdles involved in executing the childbirth scene effectively on-screen. Yet, it was this very scene in the script that sparked his desire to work on the film.
He remembered that the goal of the film was to skillfully blend together the mix of tones and elements present in that particular scene. This ranged from the absurdity of the situation and the danger it presented, all the way to its deeply moving concluding moments.
In fact, filming the scene over two days was both intense and demanding. It mirrored the struggles faced by Tobias and Almut in many aspects. The actors reenacted their scenes without the real baby until the final take.
As a gamer, I can tell you that in one go, Florence seemed to have given birth no less than eight times. The fatigue on her digital face was not feigned; it was palpable, a testament to the intensity of the gameplay.
We Live in Time is released in UK cinemas on January 1, 2025.
