There are no speed limits on the highway to the danger zone, but there are in boring reality.
In the opening scene of the 2022 hit movie Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise’s character, a test pilot, pushed a highly experimental aircraft called the Darkstar to its absolute limit – reaching an incredible speed of Mach 10. Even that wasn’t enough for the thrill-seeking Maverick, and he continued to push the plane beyond what it could handle, ultimately causing it to crash and forcing him to eject.
While some dramatic license was taken with reality, a former Top Gun instructor still had positive things to say about the intense Mach 10 flight sequence in Top Gun: Maverick. In an interview with ScreenRant, Dave Berke discussed whether Maverick’s record-breaking speed is actually possible and if he could survive ejecting from a plane traveling that fast.
Berke began by explaining the history of pushing the boundaries of flight. He clarified that Mach 10 means ten times the speed of sound. Breaking the sound barrier – achieving Mach 1 – was a major milestone. When Chuck Yeager first did it in the Bell X-1, many people thought it was impossible to fly faster than sound.
It’s common now for our aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound – most can reach Mach two, and some are even nearing Mach three. However, reaching Mach ten is a different challenge altogether. That speed enters the hypersonic range, which is five times faster than current fighter jets. Developing and testing aircraft capable of these speeds presents a significant engineering hurdle.
While the incredibly fast Darkstar plane seen in Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t exist today, Berke believes something like it might be possible in the future. He appreciates how the movie portrays this achievement, even though reaching Mach 10 with a single-pilot fighter is currently beyond our capabilities. The scene effectively blends the excitement of Hollywood with the realm of science fiction.
We’re actively looking into developing this aircraft, and we have a design in progress. There’s a strong basis in reality for this project. Lockheed Skunk Works provided guidance, so it’s definitely not just a made-up story, even if we aren’t currently building it.
While it’s ambitious and still a ways off, I’m excited about exploring this concept. We’re always trying to overcome what people believe is impossible, and this really embodies that spirit. We’ve always been passionate about speed, and I think this demonstrates that perfectly.
According to Berke, the most unrealistic part of the Mach 10 sequence is Maverick surviving his ejection from the failing plane. As a former Top Gun instructor, he’s often asked about it, and admits that in a real-life scenario, the movie would likely be very short – Maverick wouldn’t survive, let alone walk away. While acknowledging it’s a bit of a stretch, he understands why it’s in the film.
