Elon Musk blasts Ben Stiller with shock slur after actor said ‘woke’ Hollywood is killing ‘edgier’ comedy
As a film enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Tropic Thunder, directed by Ben Stiller, is one of those rare comedies that truly stands out. The film’s unique blend of humor, satire, and star power is unparalleled.
In simpler terms, Elon Musk criticized Ben Stiller quite strongly and even employed a derogatory term from the movie Tropic Thunder when Stiller voiced his reservations about a film like Tropic Thunder being produced in today’s socially aware (or “woke”) society.
The 53-year-old, known as the co-leader of Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (previously called DOGE), recently used his social media outlet (originally Twitter) to make a jab at the 58-year-old comedian.
Elon reshared a screenshot from X-user, featuring an article by DailyMail.com about Ben Stiller, titled “Ben Stiller believes ‘woke’ America has stifled edgier comedy,” accompanied by an image of one of Ben’s characters from Tropic Thunder called Simple Jack.
The user captioned it: ‘Says this….. Endorsed Kamala….’
Elon mentioned the 2008 movie by titling his repost: “Wow, he really took it to the extreme! [with hysterical laughter and tears emojis]
The slur was not censored on the platform. Ben’s Simple Jack character was a mentally challenged farm boy who can talk to animals.
Simultaneously, a debate unfolded after Ben, the director and actor of the now-disputed blend of comedy and action movie, expressed his view that creating ‘bolder’ comedy is more challenging today, during an interview with Collider.
When questioned about whether such a movie (now labeled as racially insensitive) could be produced in today’s climate, his response was, “I highly question it.
He stated, “Indeed, not on a level comparable to our production, also considering the financial aspect of the business.
‘I believe we struck gold with the production at the time, and I attribute that success primarily to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. Upon reading the script, he expressed interest and essentially gave us the green light, saying “Let’s bring this project to life.” In retrospect, it feels like an exclusive movie.’
Afterward, he mentioned the controversial portrayal of Robert Downey Jr. in the film, which has received criticism due to its usage of ‘blackface.’
In the movie, Downey Jr.’s character experiences a fictitious process known as “skin tone modification” to depict a Black soldier on screen.
Robert taking on the role of a character portraying an African-American character is quite a tricky situation, according to Stiller.
At the time, it was also quite risky, but I felt compelled to try because the humor was so apparent and it seemed to be at the expense of the actors striving for accolades.
To be completely candid with you, given the current circumstances, I’m not sure if I would have had the courage to do it.
As a lifestyle enthusiast looking back on last year, I found myself firmly standing behind the movie Tropic Thunder. This hilarious production featured an exceptional cast including Tom Cruise, Jack Black, Brandon T. Jackson, and Matthew McConaughey. Despite facing criticism from certain circles for Ben Stiller’s portrayal of a character wearing “blackface,” I remain proud of this film that has brought joy to so many.
He stated that he hadn’t apologized for any controversial aspects related to racial undertones or portrayal of people with disabilities in his stand-up act, as it had been criticized by socially conscious young adults.
In 2008, the movie directed by Stiller about a troupe of unfortunate actors stranded when they got lost during the filming of a war-themed production deep in the Vietnamese jungle became a worldwide sensation after it was released.
In more recent times, the depiction of Kirk Lazarus, an Australian actor played by Robert Downey Jr., who alters his skin tone to portray a black character, has been seen as racially problematic in certain circles.
On X (previously known as Twitter), Stiller boldly stood up for the movie, emphasizing that he’s never issued an apology for turning the film into reality, a project co-scripted by the actor himself and Justin Theroux from an original screenplay.
His admission was a response to one of numerous posts issued in defense of the film.
Hey Ben Stiller, no need to keep apologizing about that movie. It’s hilarious, then and now – even more so considering today’s cultural climate. After all, it’s just a MOVIE, meant for laughter and enjoyment!
In my expertise, I can assure you that it’s perfectly fine to embrace your amusement. When I first laid eyes on it in the past, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter, and it seemed as though everyone else did too.
In reply, Stiller posted on Twitter: “I stand firm about Tropic Thunder. I’m unaware from whom you heard differently. Since its release, it has stirred controversy. I’m proud of it and the efforts put in by everyone involved.
Another social media user pointed out an old tweet by an actor, initially shared following a playful suggestion that the movie ‘Tropic Thunder’ be prohibited. The tweet was in reaction to snowboarder Shaun White’s decision to dress as Simple Jack, a character with disabilities from the film, for Halloween in 2018.
Ten years ago, when Tropic Thunder premiered, there were protests against it. At that time, I issued an apology for any offense caused.
‘It was always meant to make fun of actors trying to do anything to win awards. I stand by my apology, the movie, Shaun White, And the great people and work of the @SpecialOlympics.’
After its premiere, over twenty disability advocacy organizations, including the Special Olympics, banded together in protest due to the movie’s frequent usage of the term “retarded.
Lately, Downey Jr. has faced criticism from progressive millennials over his portrayal of a black character, despite the self-conscious approach taken by Stiller in writing the script and his proactive measure to secure approval from the NAACP prior to its release.
In 2020, Downey Jr. shared that initially he harbored some doubts about accepting the role. However, after reconsidering, he landed a 2009 Oscar nomination for it.
He said on The Joe Rogan Experience, “Initially, I had planned, ‘Sure, I’ll get to it later, after Iron Man.’ However, as thoughts rolled in, I realized, ‘That’s a very unwise decision.’
In my fervor, I found myself reflecting: “Hey, buddy, let’s keep it honest. What about your deep emotions? Mine, you see, is a captivating journey where I get to experience a summer of blackness within my thoughts – a unique and rewarding adventure for me.
Another way to put it might be: ‘It’s also worth noting that when compared to nature, the unreasonable, self-centered hypocrisy of some artists is often exposed, particularly in instances where they believe they can act beyond societal norms.’
