As a die-hard Star Trek fan who has been following the Kelvin Timeline crew since their inception, I can’t help but feel a profound mix of emotions when contemplating the possibility of a fourth film. The loss of Anton Yelchin, our beloved Chekov, has left an indelible void that no amount of time or creative writing can fill.
In the 2016 film “Star Trek Beyond,” we last encountered the Kelvin Timeline Starfleet crew. Although it didn’t perform as well financially as its predecessors at the box office, Paramount is still considering a fourth movie. However, many challenges have delayed progress, and it’s unclear if the film will actually be made. Despite these hurdles, the cast members are eager to reprise their roles, but Simon Pegg (Scotty) has raised an issue that might need resolution – a matter of potential concern for the future.
During an interview on The Sackhoff Show (as reported by Slashfilm), Simon Pegg expressed his desire to reprise his role again, but he also mentioned that any potential return would be complicated due to the long-lasting impact of losing Anton Yelchin. He noted that it was a difficult experience not just for those involved in the project, but also for everyone affected worldwide.
If Star Trek 4 were to ever materialize, there would need to be a reason for Ensign Chekov’s absence since J.J. Abrams stated in 2016 that his role wouldn’t be filled by another actor as he felt Anton Yelchin deserved better opportunities. However, Abrams didn’t provide any specific details about how Chekov would be handled in the film, and it becomes challenging when dealing with a character whose portrayer, Yelchin, has sadly passed away.
The empty sets would serve as poignant reminders of those who were no longer part of the crew, possibly making it tougher for the cast members to continue their work. In 2017, Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) shared with Screencrush that if another Star Trek film didn’t materialize, he was content with the strong finish, expressing his feelings about losing Anton Yelchin, saying “We’re all still mourning the fact that it was our last time shooting together.” He added, “We’re like a family. It won’t feel the same without him.
Approximately eight years have passed since the release of Star Trek Beyond, and if Star Trek 4 gets produced, we might be waiting another two to three years. Regardless of the wait, it will undoubtedly remain challenging for the cast to continue filming without Anton Yelchin.
